Stopping breastfeeding & weight gain

I gave up b/f my 12 month old a month ago. I'd cut down to just a morning & evening feed only. Everyone told me I wouldn't lose all the pregnancy weight until I'd stopped (I was actually back to my normal weight). Since then I've put on nearly half a stone! Has anyone else had this problem? I took the morning after pill about 2 months ago for the first time ever and am wondering whether it could have been this? Apparently the pill gives you a massive hormonal surge. I'm normally slim and am used to eating as much as I'd like, do you think my metabolism has changed since pregnancy? Any ideas?

I put on about 4lbs when I stopped bf. I actually lost about 8lbs more than the pregnancy weight I put on when I was feeding.

I can't offer any suggestions though I'm afraid.

Each time i breastfed my children i lost more weight than i put on PIP. However when i stopped my weight just stablized. When i have my fourth babe in june i plan on breastfeeding for the longest time to get down to super-model size :-)
I am no expert but i wouldn't have thought it was the morning after pill that was responsible for all the weight you say you have put on, although it could have been to blame for some of it. My metabolism changed as soon as i stopped smoking through my first pregnancy, and this is what caused most of my weight gain through my first pregnancy...its difficult to lose afterwards too.
i definately think metabolism changes through pregnancy and would be interested to find out if that was a fact or not. Good luck PIP with losing the weight, i am sure it will come off, its not alot to lose when you think about it. Think yourself lucky it isnt stones!! you still have a chance :-) and i mean that in the nicest possible sense.

I can't offer much help either (sorry), but with breastfeeding I lost most of the pregnancy weight (and I gained soooo much) before I stopped in Jan this year. I've had to watch what I eat. It was great while it lasted eating anything I wanted, very liberating! I try and go out for a walk at least once a day, and try to go further that I used to do. Hope you get rid of those unwanted pounds....

Thanks for all your messages. At least I'm not the only one! I'm just used to scoffing all day so it's a bit of a shock to the system! It's just really annoying that all the excess weight ends up on my bum, thighs & hips while my top half looks very skinny & sad! I'm really missing those pregnancy boobs, I'm left with sad little fried eggs now!!! Typical ...

I've also lost more weight than I put on. Sounds great, but the constantly hungry/empty feeling is getting on my nerves. I'm constantly on the lookout for scabby donkeys, yet look like a biafran. I didn't feed DS1 for as long as this (11 months), so does anyone know how long it's likely to go on? I can never seem to fill myself.

Demented · 30/04/2003 19:08

Phew Droile, glad it's not just me, unfortunately I haven't quite achieved the skinny look, but I can sympathise with the constant hunger. My DS2 is 11 months too and I am feeding him three (but sometimes as much as five) times a day. I keep feeling that I should be past this stage as DS2 is enjoying his solids, I'm generally fine as long as I keep topped up. I would like to lose some more weight, thought by now I would be controlling my intake a bit more but not doing well so far.

Clarinet60 · 30/04/2003 21:40

Yes, Demented, glad there is someone else. I've still got one hell of a kangaroo pouch, though. No matter how skinny I am, it never seems to go. DH calls it the boys old house.

I wish I had perservered w bf dd - am v envious of amazing weightloss stories!

Clarinet60 · 01/05/2003 10:50

Yes Dinny, Posh Spice has nothing on us, LOL!
I don't think it's that common, actually, and depends on your basic metabolism.

florenceuk · 01/05/2003 13:40

I lost a lot of weight when I combined breastfeeding with catching DS's vomiting and diarrhoea bug - instant results!

Lindy · 01/05/2003 20:59

errrrrrrr Dinny .......... I breast fed for 8 months but two years later I still have an excess four stone - actually make that three and a half as I have finally got serious about losing weight in the last ten days!

Actually I lost weight very sensibly at a weight watchers class when I was b/feeding - the amount I could eat was specially calculated & it worked well for DS & me ....... of course I put it all back on when I stopped going!
