If you BF more than 1 child, who was the hardest to BF?

I am currently BF DD3 (3 months) and to be quite honest, she is a divil, I am a human dummy. BF DD1 was pretty hard, DD2 a breeze but DD3 is taking the piss! Who was your hardest?

dd1 - cracked nipples and nipple shields in the beginning, then fairly easy
dd2 - a breeze, apart from one bout of mastitis
ds - awful! Constant thrush, teeth at 16 weeks which he loved to bite me with... still managed to carry on until he was 2!

So your 3rd was your hardest like mine emkana. I am quite sore today which has never happened to me before. I am desperate for her to either suck her thumb or take a dummy.

DS1 - nightmare child from hell, spent 24/7 on boob and screamed when not on, now aged 6, has only changed a little , but off boob now, natch!!
DS2 - little darling but rather premature and never made it to the breast - EBM for 4 months, not fun.
DS3 - a doddle, BF for 13 months, only just stopped, v v proud of myself [smug]

I found soother/pacifier (sound better than dummy ) absolute necessity with DS1.

DS Tiny baby (5lb 1oz) and had problems getting him to latch on, he was sleep jaundiced and had to pump inorder to get breastmilk. However he became a pro at breastfeeding once he was 10 days old and over the intial problems.

DD she is fit, healthy and a good weight (6lb 13oz). She is 3 weeks old and breastfeeding is still hard. I am sore and engorged and producing enough milk to feed most the babies in the area. My health visitor cannot understand why constant leaking breasts and engorgement is a problem.

emkana, I am amazed that you fed your ds so long when you had all those problems.

Divvy · 09/05/2009 13:00

Can you give bf babies dummies? If so, is 9 months too late?

princessmel · 09/05/2009 13:02

ds, but he was a constant feeder/nuzzler.

dd fed, then had massive big gaps. 4 hours in the beginning. Fed her for nearly 2 and a half years.

AnnieLobeseder · 09/05/2009 13:07

Two DDs, both fed really well. DD1 was a bit harder as I got the usual painful letdown for the first week or so, cracked nipples, mastitis etc. With DD2 I slapped on loads of Lansinoh from the first feed and never had the slightest twinge of a problem. Can't believe how incredibly lucky I was!

emkana · 09/05/2009 13:08

reallytired, I did for two reasons:

a/ because I had the same for my dd's and I wanted to treat them all the same

b/because he has health problems and I hoped it would help him

AnnieLobeseder · 09/05/2009 13:12

Divvy - both of mine had dummies. We started DD1 quite late (as I felt I shouldn't use one, can't quite remember why now! ), but gave DD2 one from the first week. Didn't interfere with feeding at all. But then mine are both milk piggies who were always happy to take breast or bottle, breastmilk or formula - as long as it was milk in some form and going in their tummies they were happy. Again, I was incredibly lucky!

belgo · 09/05/2009 13:17

dd1- very painful- (talking razor blade pain) - but after a couple of weeks got far easier. BF 12 months.

dd2- no problems at all. BF 19 months.

ds - nightmare first two weeks- tortuously painful and mastitis that made my breast look like a tractor had run over it. Still bfing at 7 months.

PinkTulips · 09/05/2009 13:18

dd had reflux and colic and fed incessantly and had me bleeding and sore but always had a great latch and never struggled in that sense. i didn't enjy feeding her much in the first few months though.

ds1 on the other hand had a really terrible latch but was a calmer feeder and had me in less pain.

ds2 has always had an odd latch and can't handle the fast flow from my right boob at all which causes distress and crying but i haven't had much pain with him at all.

they've all 3 been hard and easy in differant respects, but i suppose dd was the hardest as i didn't have any experaince, support or MN in those days and i found it extremely upsetting. with the boys i've had support and experiance to help me with the tough bits and therefore they haven't upset me or made me feel i was struggling.

Linnet · 09/05/2009 13:26

Dd1 was a joy to feed, easy to latch on and away she went.

Dd2 was a nightmare. She wanted to feed every hour on the hour. when she wasn't feeding she was screaming and only calmed down if she was allowed to suckle, basically she just wanted to use me as a dummy, when not feeding. We tried her with a special dummy for breastfed babies but she didn't like it. So we struggled on, she was a lazy feeder and would slip off the breast which made me sore and she got to 6 weeks and I'd had enough and moved her onto bottles.

My first was more difficult in terms of getting latch sorted, bleeding nipples etc. After that we just sailed through. No problems at all at the beginning with dd2 but I had overactive letdown and a lot of vomiting to deal with. She also fed more at night (presumably because of pesky 2 yr old older sister interrupting day feeds) but actually feeding them both was fine once initial wrinkles were ironed out.

DS awouldnt have anything to do with boob- EBM for 19 months, the divil!
DD 12 weeks feeding great

cory · 10/05/2009 23:47

dd (1) - hypotonic and so weak that she just fell asleep at the breast; ended up expressing and feeding with a syringe

mears · 10/05/2009 23:52

All easy enough to feed but DS3 took the longest to sleep through at night. He was a real fatty in his baby photos.

FrankMustard · 10/05/2009 23:55

ds1 hard going, prob because my first
ds2 and 3 ok -not too many problems aside from ds2 being a biter
ds4 a dream feeder - fed him longer than all the others and enjoyed it much more that time round...and he helped me lose my babyweight (from ds1!!)
