Can anyone explain why babies make a clicky noise when they have thrush? I'm intrigued!

Maybe it's because it itches and it's a way of relieving the itch? Thats the only explanation I can think of.

Or that the throat/mouth is slightly inflamed so the tongue is not moving as it normally would hence the click?

A click is usually a sign of a poor latch. So maybe when they have thrush they don't latch on so well.

Could it be independent of the thrush?

Clicking often occurs when the baby releases the suction. In the absence of any othere problems or worries, this can simply be a way that a baby controls a v fast milk flow. Sometimes it can be an indication that the baby isn't so well attached -i.e. they are releasing suction to control flow rather than being able to control it with their tongue. Babies with tongue ties sometimes click, as they can't keep their tongue extended quite far enough over their gum and so slip and lose suction.

All of the above can cause soreness that is frequently confused with thrush. This is a useful read on the subject.
