Baby regularly vomiting after ceasing breastfeeding?

VictorianSqualor · 06/05/2009 20:48

DS2 was one last month and has pretty much self-weaned since about 8-10 weeks ago, ever since he has been vomiting, almost daily.
It isn't after food, he hasn't got any other signs of illness and it is most common when laid down to bed.
Any ideas?

is it anything to do with a cough?
ds went through a phase of vomiting after either coughing or being completely het up after being put into bed - ie having been put down - and everything would come up -
he has since got better but it was around the same sort of age and still does now if he's having an eppy about having his puffer or some such thing he may make himself sick through coughing or stress..
I think we just ended up spending more time settling him and calpol ..

VictorianSqualor · 06/05/2009 21:35

Nope, no cough, no runny nose, no nothing.

(btw, Sure you didn't mean to upset anyone but 'having an eppy' is quite offensive to some people. )

apols to all re inappropriate phrase - will try harder next time.. i thought i was quite well pc phrased - tho -

I would take him to docs VS. Get then to have a feel of his tummy. Bit of a mystery. I'd suggest food allergy but as you say not after eating.

rutyfruty · 07/05/2009 10:04

no pain is a good sign though.

VictorianSqualor · 07/05/2009 10:10

We're off to docs later, a friend suggested reflux that wasn't obvious until now because of the breastfeeding shrug

Is it at nightime only, after a bottle of formula? Or cow's milk?
How much is he having? I find B gets a bit upset when his bottle finishes, unless he's very sleepy, he'll drink it right to the end and continue sucking on the bottle until he realises it's finished then complains and flings it away...I thought it could be because he'd always had milk 'on tap' when BFing, it would just keep coming so he'd just keep going until he drifted off. Maybe your DS is taking in more than he really can cope with simply because it's available?

You could try reducing the amount to test that theory?

Can you describe your pattern a bit more? Is he laid down immediately after finishing? Maybe he needs to sit up a bit and cuddle and just allow things to settle a bit? Is it possible he's vomiting because things are refluxing a bit? You mentioned that he wanted to breastfeed more upright before he self-weaned, so maybe he's having a bit of 'backflow' that's irritating things and causing the vomit reflex?

Not much help there, but a few ideas?

LadyBee · 07/05/2009 10:13

oh Xposts there - another relux suggestion..worth checking out?

LadyBee · 07/05/2009 10:14

reflux even

VictorianSqualor · 07/05/2009 11:44

He doesn't have a bottle or anything, he won't drink milk, and when he's been laid down and then vomited it's been quite a while after he's last eaten or drank

hmmmm.
gosh.
err.

Ok, here are some more questions.

Is your child?s vomit greenish or yellow?

Does your child seem unusually drowsy?

Does your child have two or more of the following symptoms?
? Unexplained loss of weight
? Increased thirst
? Passing more urine than usual
? Excessive tiredness

Does your child have two or more of the
following symptoms?
? Fever
? Pain on passing urine
? Offensive-smelling or cloudy urine

Is your child passing pale faeces and
unusually dark urine, and/or are your child?s
skin and whites of the eyes yellow?

The above come from the British Medical Association's 'Family Doctor Home Advisor' symptom charts...

They all pretty much end up with 'See your GP' but they might give you some things to try to look for when you talk to your GP about it.

LadyBee · 07/05/2009 13:07

oh. Also, if the answer to the question
Is your child?s vomit greenish or yellow?
is "yes", then that needs a visit to the A&E (I'm sure you know that, but would feel terrible if I didn't mention it)

VictorianSqualor · 07/05/2009 13:27

No to all of them, it's really odd, apart from being sick he is completely fine.

What did the GP say VS?

I'd be tempted to give some food before bed- something easy like fruit or custard- just to 'line' his stomach before bed

VictorianSqualor · 07/05/2009 16:23

It's nto always at bedtime though, yesterday for example it was at school pick-up and then when just sat happily playing in his high chair. shrug GP at 5:30

Will check in after bedtime - hope you get some answers.

eilidhsmum · 07/05/2009 17:44

Constipation? DD had several months of vomiting late evening at the same age after weaning, otherwise well but eventually went off her food and lost some weight. Turned out to be constipated but was still passing soft stools every 2-3 days or so but backed up and bypassing IYSWM. Cows milk is much more constipating than breastmilk.

VictorianSqualor · 07/05/2009 17:53

Doc suggested mild reflux combined with a food intolerance of some sort. Need to keep a diary of the sorts of food he is eating, and be especially careful with wheat.
