Could be mastitis. Is your breast hard or does it have a lump in it? If so get to the docs quickly since antibiotics does the trick and avoids a lot of pain. I had it 3 times with DS2

No, doesnt feel like theres any lump or hardness. How does mastitis happen then?

The milk ducts get blocked. Sometimes massage will get rid of it. It can make your breasts hot too (at least it did with mine).

It might just be that sometimes the latch is slightly different and its hitting a nerve. Good luck with it.

sounds like thrush to me, shiny nips, whitish in baby mouth,

SamJamsmum · 06/05/2009 07:01

If the stabbing pains are happening towards the end of a feed and after a feed then thrush is definitely a possibility. Mastitis would be accompanied by redness on the breast, general feeling of unwellness and probably a temperature. Mastitis is usually accompanied by a lump or hard wedge on the breast (though not always).
You could have ductal thrush without other symptoms of thrush. Check out the bfn thrush leaflet:
www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/pdfs/BfN_Thrush_leaflet_Feb_2009.pdf
I would give a helpline a ring.

If the pains happen at the start of a feed then it might also be a pain associated with letdown. When do you get them?

newbabyjustarrived · 06/05/2009 20:00

been to bfc and its thrush!

Been given a script for fluconazole.

Hope that sorts it out

I got thrush after my first baby as well, and I really sympathise. It was agony to breastfeed, but somehow I got through it. We tried nipple shields, creams, etc. and only after a few weeks when I read on the internet about Thrush did I get treatment.

Console yourself with the thought that it is really quite quick to sort out once you have started treatment. A couple of days later you should be 100 times better.

Once it is gone, it is like a new life!

Good luck

Make sure that the baby gets something prescribed as well, otherwise you'll get it back.

I think I had something like Nystan (sp) to give to dd2. It was a yellowy liquid that had a dropper - gave it to dd2 before each feed.

EEk, felt like feeding through broken glass when I had thrush with ddc2

SamJamsmum · 06/05/2009 20:30

You need to make sure baby gets something too for sure. Nystatin as pp mentions or miconazole gel perhaps.
Were you prescribed a loading dose? i.e. start with more on the first day and then lesser dose after that.
Usually advisable to take lacto acidophilus alongside fluconazole. Fluconazole doesn't actually kill the thrush but just stops it growing. The acidophilus can speed up the killing process. Grapefruit seed extract can really help too.
Fluconazole can take a few days to work so don't give up hope.
