Urgent help - just home from hospital and baby vomiting up feeds

Please can someone help.

My little girl Charlotte was born on Wednesday morning. We were discharged from hospital this evening as she had some jaundice and was very mucousy after birth and so they kept us in for a few days to keep an eye.

She threw up all her 10 pm feed last night - mw said that sometimes mucousy babies need to clear the mucous and the only way they can do it is to feed and then clear the mucous along with the milk by throwing it all up. She fed well during the day today and only threw up a very little milk after each feed.

We have just got her home and I have been feeding her - she fed 10 mins from 1 breast and then threw it all up, then showed signs of rooting and wanting to feed and so fed from other breast and she has thrown all that up, tried again and again it's all come up. Poor little baby is so distressed, DP and I are trying to be calm and comfort her but don't know what to do, should we take her back to hospital? DP (he is cuddling her at the moment) says she looks as if she still wants to feed but should we do this if she is just going to throw it all back up and become even more distressed?

Is it possible that the change in environment could be upsetting her?

please help, we are so worried

Congratulations! My son was also born on Wednesday.

I'd give the maternity ward a ring and speak to one of the midwives. They'll run through some questions with you and either suggest that you bring her in or be able to reassure you.

I've not had a sicky baby but friends of mine have, so it could be normal. But I'd give the maternity ward a ring just in case.

ilovetochat · 02/05/2009 21:47

congratulations littleduck, my dd was a sicky baby and was sick after every feed, sometimes half way through, sometimes she would sleep after a feed then wake up and be sick. it looked like the whole feed but she had wet nappies so she was getting what she needed. she took too much every time and sicked most back. it took ages for her to stop. also she was windy and would get wind trapped and that would force sick up with the burps. i had to sit her up and wind her and try and keep her still and sitting up after the feed while it went down.

artichokes · 02/05/2009 21:48

Congratulations on the arrival of your little girl. Both my DDs were very sicky babies and used to appear to puke up whole feeds regularly. In fact they can't have been losing the whole feed as they gained weight but puke can look copious. Therefore I would not be too alarmed by the sick. However, the distress is more worrying. It may be nothing to do with the sick but it may be a sign of reflux or hunger. Is she comforted by feeding? If so I would keep letting her suckle. I would also call the mw for reassurance.

littleduck · 02/05/2009 22:15

DP of littleduck here. Charlie now has hichups and showing no sign of stopping. Phone MW re puking they said prob adjusting to move. any ideas on the hichups?

just carry him round a bit and try and wind him, sounds like he is gulping down air while feeding.

oopsacoconut · 02/05/2009 22:20

Dp of Littleduck - don't worry they will go of their own accord - vomiting used to make DD hiccup.

Is she having wet nappies?

Notquitegrownup · 02/05/2009 22:31

Congratulations on your new arrival. Hang on in there. The first night home is tough! It will get easier.

Could be that she is taking in lots of air with her feed - you will be sitting in a different type of chair at home. With ds1 I had to to prop myself up with pillows behind me and yellow pages under my feet so that I was sitting up straight, and my knees were at a right angle. I had to be really careful to get the latch right, making sure that his mouth gaped really wide to latch on, or he took in loads of air. It will be hard for you to relax and focus on latching her on for the next feed, in the middle of the night, but try to get a position as similar to the one you were using in hospital, to get the same position.

Is she settling yet?

Best of luck - and keep posting, if you need to. There are usually MNetters around, through the night.

dollius · 02/05/2009 22:32

Reflux?

It can be really violent. My son had a severe case of it, which didn't stop until he learnt to walk (about 14 months).

It was horrendous - vomit hitting the ceiling, practically. Mt DH and I used to find ourselves swimming in a pond of milk when I fed him at night in our bed.

Acid might explain the hiccupping as well.

SlightlyMadSwineFlu · 02/05/2009 22:33

I found that a feed was the best thing to solev hiccups.

warthog · 02/05/2009 22:34

keep an eye on the nappies. most important thing as you can see whether she's really getting anything down.

it's scary that first night, but if you're still worried, phone the maternity unit. they're there to help.

littleduck · 02/05/2009 22:47

DP still here. Hiccups gone, the worlds smelliest fart, wet nappy, feeding again. We are now happy it would seem. Long may this continue. I cannot thank you all enough, for a while there it was getting to us, but it good to know others are going through the same and all is ok. From what I can hear in the other room it sounds like the nappy has lasted 10 secounds and is now full!!! It would also be my daughter with the stinky bottom!!

if she is managing to keep any milk down, is alert or looking hungry and most importantly is getting plenty of wet nappies (can be days without a poo in bf babies if the meconium has stopped), then she is likely ok, just her appetite and your milk supply slowly adjusting.

You should hopefully be seeing your mw tomorrow? if not, and you are still concerned then ring your maternity unit at any time - that is what they are there for! You should certainly take her in or ring if she is drowsy, not keeping any milk at all down, or nappies are not wet.

The first few nights are hard, you will adapt amazingly quickly, I promise - and congratulations!

hellymelly · 02/05/2009 22:51

both my babas regularly brought up what looked like the whole feed and were then hungry again. The second one did it more often but she was the one who gained weight the fastest. The HV said that their tummies are so small that they will just throw up any extra (I was worried about reflux, but it wasn't).Congratulations by the way!

littleduck · 02/05/2009 23:28

DP one last time. Both the girls are trying to sleep, I think the new one has my problem.... eyes way way bigger than tummy!!
I am off to the kitchen to get my first beer in days, and to continue to be in awe of all mothers.

toddlerama · 02/05/2009 23:36

My DD1 did this and it was reflux. Hope it's not the case for Charlotte. Just keep feeding even if you feel like it's constant. It does get easier and she will keep some down - evidenced by the poo-nami! Congratulations on bringing your lovely baby home.

aurorec · 02/05/2009 23:44

To littleduck and littleduck's DP- congratulations on your new arrival!

And enjoy the beer

MumHadEnough · 03/05/2009 00:45

Awww what a lovely last message Littleduck's DP.

Hope you all manage to get some sleep. Congratulations on your new arrival x

littleduck · 03/05/2009 11:26

Littleduck back again

Just to let you know that Charlotte and I settled to sleep following DP's last post - she fed again at 1.45 and 5.45 am without being particularly sick, wee and small amount of poo in nappies when I changed her before each feed and the same when I changed her before feeding at 8.40. Slept peacefully between the feeds and is sleeping again now so will wake her to feed again shortly.

She does seem to take a bit more than her tummy can handle (as DP said she is just like him in that way! ) and as my milk only came in yesterday I suppose she is learning how much to have. I think the milk flows very quickly as she seems to drink and you can almost see it spilling out of her mouth, she comes off and brings some up and then wants to continue the feed.

It all feels very daunting, this motherhood stuff - not knowing quite what to do or what is wrong or what is normal and what's not. I guess we'll figure it out as we go along but I must admit to feeling a bit overwhelmed!

with so many thanks for all your support when DP and I so desperately needed some wise words

Ld and DP xxx
