Returning to work bf advice please

I'm planing on returning to work in the next month or so, when my son will be 9 months old. He's still bf and I was hoping to carry on for longer, as I don't want him on formula milk, so I'm hoping some of you may be able to answer some of the questions I have:

  • Would he be getting sufficient if I feed him am and pm, and he has just one or 2 cups ebm (about 6-8oz) during the day (his food diet is very well balanced), and water for his other drinks?

  • Would a nursery be happy to receive/store and feed him ebm?

I had thought about starting to build up a supply in the freezer now so when I go back to work I have enough to not have to express continually in the evenings.

Failing that, what would be the perils of giving him cows milk as his drink early - all I can find as a reason is the lack of iron, but if I'm careful can I not include this in his diet elsewhere and wean from breast to cows milk at 9 mths?

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom!

Hi

I panicked about this with dd but by the time I went back to work she was on 2 feeds a day am and pm.

I am sure the nursery should be able to store ebm.

dd drank water/dilute juice as well as her bf.She also had lots of stuff like fromage frais and yoghurt so was geting plenty of dairy stuff. As long as your LO gets a balanced diet and is still having some bm I am sure this won't be an issue re iron.

I was really stressed about it all but it worked out fine.DD self weaned at 13 months.Good luck

Thanks wrinklytum - I bf'd my first son for 9 months, only giving up so we could conceive no.2! I hoped to carry on past this with no.2, and it sounds like this may be a possibility even with work getting in the way - fingers crossed!

I'm watching this with interest as I'll be in roughly the same position next month. However, more complicated for us as DS intolerant to dairy a poor eater and still quite heavily reliant on BF
