Is it normal to feel really down when you stop BF? And how long does it last?

DS is nearly 17 months and haven't fed him for a bout 5 days or so. Before that it was once every two days or once a day so it has been very gradual. However since I stopped I have been feeling really low and I wonder if the two things are related. Did anyone else feel down when they stopped BF and when can I expect to feel better? Or is my feeling low nothing to do with BF? Thanks

I stopped bfing dd2 when she was 19 months old, and she was fine with it, but I was very upset, and my hormones up and down for a few weeks.

I felt rubbish for a couple of weeks. Partly hormonal and partly cos it was DS choice not mine.

I felt really really low too.

Must have been hormones as chocolate didn't help...

Doctorskidaddle · 01/05/2009 16:37

thanks both - when you said your hormones were up and down - how did you feel - did you feel depressed/moody/tearful...? Was it something like how you feel when pg? I have been feeling really negative and a bit weepy which is not usual at all for me. But it is v. different to the irrational mood swings of pregnancy

I was definitely weepy. I think it was due to the hormones and also just being uspet about no longer bfing.

Well done for bfing so long

My ds sounds a bit like yours - a gradual lessening of wanting to bf and then (at around 17 mths) I realised I hadn't fed him for a few days. I don't remember feeling particularly low, more sort of wistful that it had come to an end.

thanks belgo it is good to hear it happens to other people too - and I am sure there is an element of regret in it for me aswell

ilovemydog - chocolate doesn't help???! What about red wine?
