Made me feel as if im doing something wrong by still feeeding her She asked why i was still feeding her, like its any of her bussiness!!
Not the first time i have had this reaction from a doctor, surely they of all people know why???

My GP was encouraging of me still bfing my ds (six months), but did feel the need to tell me 'as long as he's having other food'- he's my third child, she knows that, why did she think I needed to be told that he needs food other then breastmilk?

lisad123 · 01/05/2009 12:14

lol, yes well i thought they could live oh just bm till 5years right! is that wrong

I suppose bfing past 3/4 months is still relatively unusual, and it means that the GP has to think 'what medication can I prescribe for a bfing mother'.
And GPs are just not bfing experts.

How is your dh Lisa?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 01/05/2009 12:22

Well I suppose its good that she asked, maybe she thought that you weren't doing it through choice but were having problems weaning. Good opportunity for you to broaden her horizons.

DS and I were at the GP a couple of weeks back. I was pretty ill with Scarletina (mild scarlet fever) and I asked about the painkillers and antibiotics re breastfeeding.

She asked how old ds was, and when I said he was 3.5yo, she burst out laughing.

If I hadn't felt so shite, I would have picked her up on it because it's not on really.

I know the easy thing is to say "oh, take no notice", but it's not a nice feeling when they say stuff like that.

alexpolismum · 01/05/2009 15:16

mawbroon - at your GP! That's so rude! Fancy laughing at a patient!

Doctorskidaddle · 01/05/2009 16:53

god that is awful mawbroon - I would seriously think about making a complaint

DuffyFluckling · 01/05/2009 17:02

Mawbroon - I had a bad allergic reaction last year. In the hospital they were hooking me up to various drips etc and I asked about breastfeeding and the drugs I was taking. They were quite happy to find out for me and take my breastfeeding into account until they realised that dd was 12 months old, at which point they pretty much made the face and couldn't be bothered. It was like breastfeeding anything other than a newborn was just me being difficult.

OP - how much do you want to go to the wedding? I went to a no-babies wedding when dd was tiny by booking a hotel room where the reception was and leaving her sleeping with my sister who texted as soon as dd stirred and might need feeding . I really wanted to go to that wedding though.

belgo, his doing ok, they have said about a year for full remission, so long way to go. I have a blog going if you want more updated info here

my gp encouraged me to 'stop' bf when ds was about 8 months.. said it wasnt 'recommended'..totally ignored her and carried on until ds was 20/21 months.. go for it ladies, good on u for carrying on (if you want too )

lisad123 · 03/05/2009 12:22

sammy!! did she given reasons?

OP posts:
sammysamsam · 05/05/2009 18:50

lisad, no she didn't, and tbh, i didnt ask- wish i'd gunnned her down now! i actually felt quite embarrassed at the time (as i was doing something wrong ) and made out that i was actually 'trying' to stop and that i wouldnt be continuing with it for much longer..

PrettyCandles · 05/05/2009 18:57

Drs can be a bit weird re bfing: I asked gp whether a medicine he wanted to prescribe for me was appropriate wrt bfing, as I was bfing 18m dd. He promptly started worrying about malnutrition, whether she could possibly be getting everything she needed. And this was while dd was playing at his feet and giving a running commentary on the toys (and she was on the 91st centile for height and weight)!
