Odd weight gain in 4 week old - can anyone help??

My 4 week + 3 day old DS was 7lb / 3172g at birth, then lost 5% of his birth weight when weighed at 5 days. 13 days later he was weighed again and had put on 320g which is I think nearly 6oz... I weighed him this week - 13 days on from the last weigh in and he has only gained 14 grams! Is this normal? he is exclusively bf every 2/3hrs (sometimes more) with no problems as far as I can tell, has good colour, is alert etc, always doing good pooey nappies and wees everytime I change him!

The health visitor has told me to come back next week to be checked again but of course I am now worried that he is not doing as well as he should. He is kind of skinny looking but i thought all newborns were for the first month or so...

Any advice?? Thanking you in advance for any expertise xxx

Are they using the same set of scales each time? If not that can make a big difference.

that's pretty much exactly what happened to my dd1. At 4 weeks she had put on practically nothing; doctor said to come back in a week, but couldn't as we were going abroad for three weeks to see my parents. When she was weighed one month later her weight gain was average for her age. She is now aged 4 and has been cruising up her growth chart ever since.

peaches - the change of scales can affect baby's weight gain so try not to fret. Leave it longer to go back to the clinic if you want.

On the other hand a good and effiecient latch on at the breast can slide into a less effective latch which can lead to less efficient feeding.

So check your sitting position/attachment/dc's position at the breast/length of feeds/one breast or two breasts etc etc - by eye I mean. just take time to think about it and re-adjust if necessary.

And when you've done that and all is fine (which I bet it is!) then relax!

Thanks so much for reassurance- I was cruising along thinking how lucky I was to have such a good feeder and am loving the b'feeding so it was a shock to be told he could be doing better by the HV! I will keep an eye on my technique though, after practically 3 straight hours of feeding I did get a bit slouchy.
