The best formula milk?

Not trying to be controversial, but has any actual research been done on formula?

Are there any that are actually better than others?

I need to know before I make a tit (pun unintended) of myself.

I would have liked to know this when I was choosing which one to use for ds. As far as I know there isn't any proper research. If one is actually better than the others we should all know about it

bump for interest!

All formulas have to measure up to certain nutritional regulations to make them fit for infant consumption. Other than that, AFAIK, no one knows, except the company, what if any are the benefits of the other ingredients. (these are the ingredients the companies claim make them closer to breast milk etc etc.) I think all they have to be able to prove is that they are not harmful.

So there is no unbiased information out there regarding formula, I don't think.

Lulumama · 29/04/2009 16:35

i think titok has posted stuff in the past with info about how formulas compare to each other and there is not a lot in it.

i am with hana... that hipp is the best one to go for. all the fish oils, immuno stuff freaks me out a bit

and bear in mind, the best one can also be the one you can buy in the 24hour garage when you discover you have no milk left at 2am..

but i thikn that formulas are closer to each other, than to breast milk and it is impossible to get unbiased info about it

Thanks for the replies so far.

I see a chiropracter who has a very holistic view on health and has many leaflets/literature lying around the waiting room along these lines.
One is a typed leaflet about the benefits of bf, all good so far....but I know at least some of the info is wrong. Before I point it out, I want to make sure I'm not as far up my own arse as I know i can be, iyswim.

who produced the leaflets Alistair? that is the most telling part, and is this a private chiropractor?

foxytocin · 29/04/2009 16:45

oh, actual research is frightfully limited. one i read about here on mn was like it being trialled on 80 babies for 3 months and in that time a 3rd of the babies dropping out because the formulation didn't 'agree with them.' heinz nurture i think it was if i am remembering rightly.

AlistairSim · 29/04/2009 16:47

Private chiro and made by the chiro, I think, as there are no headings, notations etc.

I didn't think there was any real research done (and am far too lazy to google) but thought I'd check here as someone is bound to know.

this thread about heinz gives a good idea how formula is marketed.

Thanks, foxy.
