BF four week old wriggling whilst latched on

Hi
my little wriggler clamps his mouth shut and then starts to wriggle, quite actively, trying to work wind out, usually at the end of feeds. This gives him good results from both ends but scares me as I'm sure he's going to do my nipple some damage at some point. Do I try to take him off (using my pinky) every time he starts doing this? Any other ideas?

He also likes to open his mouth and shake his head from side to side rapidly, bouncing my nipple from side to side (totally painless-his mouth is wide open), becoming agitated/annoyed if I try to intervene or remove him. He will then suddenly stop by latching on quite firmly and resuming sucking, also scaring me into what he may one day do to my poor nipple, perhaps by accident. Any ideas as to what that's all about? Oh, and he's been doing this one from day one!

I'm not sure what to do about the wriggling, but DS used to do the 'shaking head with open mouth round nipple' thing a LOT when he was tiny. I think he stopped at about 10/11 weeks - never noticed it at the time, but at 12 weeks I suddenly realised he didn't do it any more! We never did get to the bottom of it - he used to seem very cross. Wind? Let-down not to his precise specification?

Does your nipple actually feel sore after all this agitation? If not, I wouldn't worry too much. I think they're tougher than they feel - lots of women here have breastfed through split, infected and mangled nipples and come through intact, although obviously I'm hoping nothing like that will happen to you!

My lo does this too, I usually stop her and wind her and start again and she sort of gets the message - looks askance at me having stopped her and arches he back to get back on if still hungry, staying sat up if she has had enough. When she wriggles I hold her closer (best not to say I squeeze her?!!) to try to discourage her. Its annoying as I worry about losing my nipple, but it also makes me laugh as she looks so funny when she does it!
