Help! My daughter is being weaned at a week old on to lansinoh and blood

The midwives tell me that my latch is fine, but gawd I don't remember breastfeeding being this painful with my son.

The cracked nipples are healing, but the first few minutes of each feed are hideous.

you poor thing....

God you poor thing - I had a nightmare at first. I found nipple shields helped (only NUK ones as they are really thin silicon) then naked nips the rest of the time (healing helped by spit). Sorry that's a bit TMI.

I think it depends on the baby too - I know people who've had no pain with one and then agony with the next.

Also it might be worth seeing a bf counsellor - my midwives told me that my latch was fine but it really wasn't.

I was told my latch was fine but it was still agony. I second the nipple shields even just for a few feeds to give them a bit of a rest (it still hurts but not as badly). Could you have thrush? That's horrific if it sets in.

Lots of fresh air on nipples, half a tube of lansinoh and if you're sure the latch is fine maybe see a (sympathetic) GP.

Really hope it gets sorted soon!

Has she been checked for tongue tie reallytired?

Also, can you get a BFC to come and check your latch; you know from reading on here that MWs aren't always best placed to advise on BFing matters and that many women have been told their latch is fine, when it isn't.

A good gauge of how well the latch is, is in the shape of the nipple when it comes out....if it's still nipple shaped then the latch is OK, but if it's wedge shaped then it isn't and will be rubbing on the roof fo baby's mouth causing irritation. Minor positioning adjustments of baby's head towards or away from your armpit might help, or try biological nurturing positions.

DS2 and I had thrush in the first week (his poor wee tongue was carpeted and I didn't notice ) and feeding for me was agony. I had to squeeze DH's hand really tightly when latching and really psych myself up before trying to get him on. IT did pass once we had both had treatment though.

My midwife told me to rub on glyercine and whiskey, it worked a treat, I think I mixed a couple of teaspoons of each in an egg cup, and then sit topless

for you I had trouble with both my girls, ds knew what he was doing not a sore nipple in site

Chulita · 29/04/2009 13:34

I suppose if the glycerine and whiskey doesn't work you could always down it...one way or the other it'll stop the pain...

I was told my latch was fine but I had bleeding nipples and was in a lot of pain. The help of a BFC at the local hospital and nipple shields helped me. I used the medela ones that are only available by calling the company (smaller and thinner than the ones I found in the shops)

Good luck :-)

I would second checking for tongue tie if you haven't done so already. I was in agony with breastfeeding my dd initially until a HV spotted a slight tongue tie (at 5 wks). Latch had been checked previously & declared fine so I was at my wits end at this point. As soon as it was fixed the change was immediate.

Thanks for your messages of support. Feeding is getting better. Its still sore though.

I took my daughter to a La Leche League meeting with the hope that a LLL councellor could have a look at her latch. Unfortunately she flatly refused to feed as it was far too interesting watching all the other babies and toddlers.
