Advice on best sort of chair for breast feeding....

Hi,

I'm 33 weeks pregnant and planning on breast feeding and am wondering what the best sort of chair would be to use (I'm thinking of setting something up in our bedroom near the cot for the first few weeks/months). I tried the follow chair out at Ikea

www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S99840159

And although it was very comfortable, especially with the foot stool, I suspect it might be a bit too reclined, which I think might make getting the baby at the right level difficult without numerous pillows.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks...

we have ikea paong. not bad for rocking.

but if for actual feeding. particurly bf .

you need something with high padded arm rests. thats quite upright.

we had this

[[http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cosatto-360-Swivel-Glider-Chair/dp/B000M1Y3J6 cosatto 360 glider]

cant fault it. stool rocks too. the swivel makes it great if you have a baby thats easily distracted when feeding or if guests in. i would whip my boob out and swivel round so not facing them.

I found the Poang (plus footstool) great for BF myself. However, if you do get one go for the 'robust' covers instead of the fabric ones. They are more expensive but the chair will get sprayed with milk constantly and the fabric covers aren't washable...

Chairs aside, being able to feed laying down is a godsend, you get to rest properly for the whole of the feed. It's easy enough but if you can't master it easily do get someone to show you how.

wastingmyeducation · 28/04/2009 11:43

It really depends on how you hold the LO to feed.
I need a chair with no arms at all as DS lies across my knees.

Traditional nursing chairs are low, generally upright, with no arms and lots can be bought on ebay. I've not found one I like cheap enough, but if you're going to buy a chair anyway, that would be my suggestion.

Poang useless for feeding for me I'm afraid. I've got a pouffe against the wall to sit on for his night feeds. Fed him sat up in bed til he went to his own room.

SamJamsmum · 28/04/2009 11:45

I find arms on chairs a right pain.
I like a good sofa myself (and a bed for lying down).

fishie · 28/04/2009 11:47

those nursing chairs made me feel very sick. get one of those v shaped pillows instead.

ridingjoker · 28/04/2009 11:57

i did a lot of bf on a sofa with pillow too.

KiwiPanda · 28/04/2009 12:42

Mariasinger - that chair is the one they have in Peter Jones in Sloane Square in London and I LOVE it, it's super comfy and the only chair i can feed DD in without needing extra pillows etc. And you've found it at 1/3 of the price, you are GENIUS thank you!!

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 28/04/2009 12:57

Hi I was fine during the day on the sofa but could not get comfortable at night in bed so ended up investing in this (not from this shop tho' ) it's fab and the inflatble cushion under the back gives me excellent support. It's now ready in wait for the imminent arrival of dc3!!

feralgirl · 28/04/2009 13:24

We already had a poang (love the name!) and footstool which have been great, not that I've tried a 'proper' nursing chair though. I've used a V-shaped pillow or proper nursing pillow for padding. I had horrendous back-ache to start with when I kept feeding DS sitting up in bed which vanished immediately when I started sitting in a chair.

However I reckon that if I was going to spend £80 on a poang then I would just spend the wee bit extra and get that Baby Weavers one as it looks ace (free delivery too!) I am actually wondering whether my measly maternity pay will stretch to buying it now.

wastingmyeducation · 28/04/2009 13:28

Oh Doris! That's the chair I really want! Next time...
Did you find a more cost-effective place to purchase it from? They hardly come up on ebay, so they must be good!

Seeline · 28/04/2009 13:28

You don't need a special chair. After the first few days, it becomes like second nature, and as long as you've got a cushion/pillow handy, you can get quite comfy. Honestly, you won't want to take yourself of to 'the chair' every time you feed - you will feed everywhere, so unless you can really afford the extra, I really wouldn't bother!

thomasina1 · 28/04/2009 13:34

Agree with seeline. I now feed wherever I happen to be - sofa downstairs, bed in my room, beanbag in DD's room. Not forgetting various chairs in cafes and on the grass in the park! It does seem hard to believe in the first month maybe, but it does become second nature very soon after that.

wastingmyeducation · 28/04/2009 13:38

I agree with Seeline and thomasina that you don't want to become reliant on any particular chair or cushion or other prop. But the bedtime and morning feeds and all the night feeds are all going to happen in roughly the same place, so if you can make yourself comfy, it's a much more pleasant experience.

Divvy · 28/04/2009 13:40

I have found my computer chair the most comfy for feeding on. Plus I get net time while feeding

imoverhere · 28/04/2009 13:40

Agree with Seeline too. Just get youself a good pillow or cushion - i like a big one myself (ooh er) to stick behind my back for more support. Also at night you'll prob not want to get out of bed if you can help it, let alone cart yourself off to a diff room to feed.

Having said all that, I did covet the lovely looking bf chairs, just cause they look so nice.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 28/04/2009 14:55

Wasting- I can't remember how much but It was 2 years ago!!! Has been my bedroom chair for the past year or so now after this dc I may get rid but.....

nocluemum · 28/04/2009 15:14

I had this chair for ds and now willuse it shortly i hope for dd. Although it was comfy I found the arms werent high enough even with a breast feeding v shaped pillow to comfortably hold ds whilst feeding without holding my arms up. Ended up wrapping a pillow round each arm with lengths of ribbon and still using the v shaped pillow. Looked awful but v comfy.

foofi · 28/04/2009 15:35

Haven't read the whole thread - but would personally say that a footstool is a good idea.

ArmindaVeach · 13/08/2018 08:44

You can also go with the orbit or giant chair for more comfort.

LaurieMarlow · 15/08/2018 10:30

I got the 'my breast friend' cushion (terrible name) and can feed pretty much anywhere. In that I'd prefer back support, but it's not necessary.
