Does breastfeeding offer any immunity to chickenpox for a 9 month old?

My neice has just developed chickenpox and she and my 9 month old ds spent a lot of time 2 days ago exchanging germs. I am still breastfeeding so am wondering will he still get any chicken pox immunity from me at 9 months?

In my experience, no. DD1 passed it on to DD2 who was 4 months at the time and bf exclusively. DD2 also had it more severely than dd1, sorry!

Thanks sprogstersmum - that's what I thought I was just hopeful as we have a wedding and another family thing in the next 3 weeks. I suppose I'll just have to be on the alert for the dreaded spots. Bum.

Sprogsters mum is correct AFAIK. The immune componants transmitted by breastfeeding arent the right type to prevent the development of chicken pox.

No doesn't. My 5.5 month old got it from his brother whilst being exclusively breastfed. If you ds does get it, and it's very bad very quickly, ask your doctor to prescribe aciclovir liquid. It's an anti viral used to treat cpox in the vulnerable.

DS2 devleoped 100+ spots (we stopped trying to count at about 60 distinct ones and that was less than half his body) in less than 36 hours - he looked liked he'd been dipped in acid or something. GP said that given the severity and the speed, and his age, he was very happy to prescribe it. It was almost miraculous. The spread and development stopped dead, and the spots healed within days rather than weeks. Definiately worth asking about for children with severe cases.

I am BFing my 14mth old and he just caught chkn pox from his sister. He has a really light case with just some light spots on his arms and legs. So much less than his sister. I'm thinking my BM could be helping to fight his CP? If so this BM stuff is like liquid gold!

my baby got chicken pox at 7 weeks - exclusively breastfed.... rather a shock!

Similar experience here I'm afraid, 6mo bf DD2 caught it from DD1. She had it pretty badly (the 'dipped in acid' comment sums it up nicely). Dr said that under 1 yr they sometimes get it very mildly but then can get it again, the only upside of DD2 having such a bad rash was that it meant she was making her own anti-bodies so would develop immunity.

DD2 has just got over German Measles and then last night I heard that a baby she was in contact with has suspected Mumps! Really hoping to get to the MMR without her suffering the full complement of diseases!
