Breastfeeding vs Bottle Feeding: Go Bottles!

{Photo by pfly} The Blessing of the Bottles
In this, the 21st Century, we are blessed with some pretty amazing formulas. Today's formulas are just as nutritious as human milk. In some cases, with babies allergic to breastmilk, the formula is better for them!
Just as you can cuddle and bond with your baby while breastfeeding, you can do the same with the bottle. In fact, everyone can bond using the bottle. You can share the evening feedings with your hubby, or have Grandma sit in for a few hours without needing to pump.

Bottle feeding is also beneficial because you can see exactly how much food your infant is getting. Determining the same for breastfed babies takes more effort. (Like using a Breastfeeding Diary.)

You also never have to worry about your diet affecting your baby. You can eat whatever you'd like without having to concern yourself on whether the broccoli you ate for supper will haunt you with a fussy baby at 2 in the morning.

The Curse of the Breasts
Because breastmilk is so easily digested, your baby will burn through it more quickly, requring more breastfeeding sessions. If you will be going back to work, breastfeeding can be difficult to balance (although not impossible). Breastfeeding at work takes more...well...work.
If you have a chronic condition that leaves you weak, breastfeeding could hurt your stamina even further. Speak with your doctor about your condition and whether breastfeeding would be too much of a strain on your system. You should also speak to your doctor if you are taking any medication on a regular basis. Some medicines can pass into your breastmilk and harm your newborn.

Breastfeeding takes time to learn. It will be several weeks for you and your baby to be working in rhythm with each other. The decision attached to breastfeeding vs bottle feeding must be made with the understanding that you will not (most likely) start breastfeeding as a pro. It is a skill that must be practiced before it is perfected.

Is that the whole "balanced" article?

llareggub · 26/04/2009 20:52

It's incorrect but taken in context of the whole article, not as nuts as we might be led to believe.Do remember thoguh that any idiot can say what they like on the Internet.
It's not as if it is official guidance, just some bored mom from Iowa.

Shock
AcademicMum · 26/04/2009 21:53

Although I don't agree with the above, in fairness the following is from the same website.

"The benefits of breastfeeding are overwhelming. Breastfeeding a little (for even a little while) can only help your baby. Even if you supplement with formula, every ounce of breastmilk will boost your baby's health for future months to come."

Juwesm · 26/04/2009 22:06

Allergic to breastmilk??

Does that really happen??

tiktok · 26/04/2009 23:00

"Crazy stuff posted on website with no visible attribution to anyone in particular: shock, horror."

Why give them the satisfaction of the hits?

Chill, TBM...getting fussed about this sort of stuff is a waste of time!

EachPeachPearMum · 26/04/2009 23:00

"the curse of breasts"?????

Hmmm.. yes men always see them as a curse!

bonding through bottles.... right- so before formula was invented no fathers ever bonded with their children did they?

Like you need to see whether your baby is getting enough milk... erm- mine screams at me when he hasn't had enough... I get the message!

aurorec · 27/04/2009 09:29

I love the way good digestion is turned into a bad thing...

Re allergy to breastmilk as far as I know some babies are allergic to milk protein- but that would apply to ANY milk not just breastmilk.

I would love to read the rest of the article but as Tiktok said I don't want to give them the satisfaction of the hits. Even it is 'more balanced' the information given here is patantly untrue.

Re easy of bottle feeding, am I the only one who likes not having to lug bottles/powder/sterilising kit etc everywhere I go? When I'm travelling/out and about all I need to worry about are nappies and teething toys.

jellybeans · 27/04/2009 09:31

That is written by someone very biased and maybe who feels bad about her choices?

TBM · 27/04/2009 23:24

I'm chilled I just thought I'd share.

There is an opposite article, but the only way this would "balance" the other one is if it was true.

The writer mixed fed and I think it is quite obvious from her posts that she thinks it's the only way to go forward, you can't possibly do both.

weebump · 27/04/2009 23:35

Ah come on. You only quoted half the article. It's a 'debate' with both sides argued and you only quoted the pro bottle argument. It doesn't claim to be official. The fact that you quoted it at all could confuse some people who only read your 1st post and think this is actual advice.

studentBFC · 28/04/2009 16:49

seriously do you actually believe that, or have you just put it on here to rile everybody up???

GinaTonic · 28/04/2009 20:04

I keep seeing this 'see how much your baby is getting' with reference to the advantages of bottle feeding. Why the obsession with knowing the exact fluid ounces of every feed?
Like EachPeach said if he's hungry he'll ask for it/ demand more. If he's not asking as much/ at all there's something wrong.

beetlemum · 28/04/2009 20:17

fucking hell fire as they say round 'ere

MintyyAeroEgg · 28/04/2009 20:21

Truly, there are things easily accessible on the internet that are a zillion times more shocking than that.

I wish t'internet did not exist tbh.

TBM · 28/04/2009 23:19

I wasn't planning on only posting as much as I did but the fight against monsters took priority and by the time I came back the link had been posted so I left the rest, it was there.

I thought it was interesting, I wasn't trying to rile people up or whatever. It's hardly a debate when it's one woman with issues posting all three sides.

Juwesm - my cousin's baby was allergic to her breastmilk. She fed her for 11 months believing it was doing her good - of course. But when moved onto soya based formula all symptoms improved dramatically. (She had been wrapped in clothes twice a day- had to wear gloves to stop her tearing her skin etc). She was diagnosed by lumbar puncture procedure at Great Ormond St - who prescribed the soya. It's very rare but not unheard of - can't remember the clinical name. Basically she is allergic to the milk of mammals including humans. Even now if a splash of milk lands on her hand it flares up into a rash immediately. Her sister was bf too and is completely fine.
