dc4 is 11 days old and we have finally got past the engorged and sore nipples stage.
Except everythings ok on the right side. He latchs on and feeds well. On the left side it is agony. The breast is soft with no lumps and doesn't hurt to massage it. The nipple is fine and not sore ( well only a little, both sides were sore hardening up and its clearing up) yet when he latches on it is agonising and it carries on hurting as he feeds. He feeds well still, it just seems to be my problem to the point where I have to really gear myself up to him feeding on that side sometimes crying at the thought and I spend the first 5minutes swearing under my breath.
It doesnt feel like when Ive had mastitus before yet I would describe it as a burning sensation.

Any ideas?

please

Sounds like it could be thrush to me?

ShowOfHands · 26/04/2009 14:37

Yes thrush, in the breast by the sounds of it.

Would it a) not have spread to the other side by now I didnt realise you would get it on one side only and b) show in dss mouth?

Ok going to read Kellymom on thrush now. Hoping I can treat it without trying to get to the gps.

When I had it my symptoms were just like yours, no sign of it in DS's mouth.

Very painful, I would take paracetamol and see GP 1st thing tomorrow.

Got hv tomorrow so will see if I can get her to ask the gp for a prescription as getting to the surgery is a nightmare let alone getting an appointment

Ouch - it does sound like thrush. I struggled with this for months.

The Breastfeeding Network have a leaflet on the treatment you need, fluconazole, my GP was happy to prescribe for me. It isn't licensed for use while BFing, although much large dosage than gets to baby via milk is licensed to give directly to infants so there is no problem. If you google then you will find the leaflet.

The initial course is ten days, I needed an extension to 17 to get rid of it but I'd had it for ages before I got proper diagnosis and treatment.
Don't be put off by anyone telling you that you can't have it if DS' mouth is clear - DS never showed any symptoms at all.
