HI all, i have just started back to work and have the most devine 12 month old. fully breast fed up until now and this has been really successful. i have loved it for the most part ( mainly because i am lazy and once BF is up and runnning is the easiest thing in the world!). now i am at work and expressing, work have been exellent about it and no problems there. At nursery DS not drinking any milk (offering EBF and cows milk) but will have a couple of sips of water if he is thirsty but no more than this. My problem is i am worrying about how much liquid he is getting. he is by no means a good sleeper (co-sleeping through nessisty although i have come to find the positives in this!) and the thought of him catching up at night while working full time fills me with horror. How long can he go on like this with so little to drink? anyone any experiences?
secondly expressing not going that great and getting hardly anything so think i am going to have to switch to follow-on for during the day. He is rather small (but no developmental issues) and he really needs the protein and calories from the milk, as he is not really a big eater (although will eat all the fruit porridge and toast you will give him, this is not a balanced diet!)anyone with any advice on follow on formula??

sorry this is so long. have a good day!

Hi Pastagirl, there are quite a few points in your post. There is good info on www.kellymom.com about expressing, what's a typical amount to achieve, and about reverse cycling - when a baby takes more evenings/nights when the mother is out at work during the day for example. If he takes lots of milk overnight then you probably wouldn't need to worry about amount of milk he takes at nursery. Of course not wanting to be feeding during the night when you have to work the next day is a different issue (and very understandable!). If he doesn't take EBM or cowsmilk at nursery then he might not take formula either. The reasons for using follow-on formula instead of formula designed for use from birth, or rather reasons for not using follow-on have been discussed in other threads - try doing a search of the archives.

I'm sorry I don't have answers to all your questions but hope this help a bit anyway

Is the nursery close enough to your work that you could pop there in your lunchtime for a feed? It might be easier on you than expressing and at least you know he's having one good feed during the day.
