10wk old not gained weight in last 2 weeks: advice and positive stories needed!

hello

I had a shock this morning when I took DS to get weighed and he hadnt put on any weight in the last 2 weeks (in fact he had lost 1.5oz) after doing really well.

This has concided with intro a formula feed at 11pm at 8 weeks (i still express 10/10.30pm to keep supply up) which i did as I suffer from insomnia / anxiety so not able to get back to sleep after the mid of the night feed (i also have a toddler). since the formula bottle he has dropped the mid of the night feed, but has also become more windy coming on and off the breast (though not at all feeds). Could either of these be the reason why he hant put on any weight?

The HV isnt worried (she knows about my anxiety!) as he is still on his birth centile (9th) he shot up to the 25th post birth not losing any of his birth weight (he even got close to the 50th in recent weeks!) and says to come back in 2 weeks....but i cant wait!

My options are:

  • check latch
  • give him a top up of EBM after each feed to see if he is still hungry to check supply
  • make sure wind him properly - which have been doing

Has anyone had same experience and it been ok??
Any advice for me?

Thanks very much!

thanks booksgalore for pointing me to that thread.

the difference is that DS (i think) is feeding well. feeds fairly quickly and had all the signs of being full. i always offer him the 2nd breast, and although am trying to stick to feeding him every 3 hours so i know where i am i always feed him if he wants it. i am also expressing where i have replaced with the formula feed (i.e. 10.30/11pm),

The HV said that HE (i.e DS) has chosen to drop the night feed so there is no need to start waking him up again (especially as I also have mental health issue - anxiety & insomnia - so need my sleep). you are lucky enough to be able fall back to sleep after the night feed so it doesnt affect you if you start to wake your baby up again. i guess I need to try and up his food in the day

one thing worth mentioning for your case that the HV told me is that sometimes babys 'grow' in length rather than weight - it sounds as if yours could certainly be doing that! (it doesnt relate to me)

if there is anyone else who has experience a similiar case as me would love to hear from you

just to update....

I have booked a doctors appt tomorrow morning to chec DS hasnt got thrush in his mouth. we stopped treatment for thrush two wees ago (tho he never actually had any symptons), so that maybe the cause also for him coming on and off the breast (tho it isnt at every feed). i'm clutching a bit at straws....i just want to do something ove the next two weeks to sort it out.

my instinct is that the no-weight gain is because DS has dropped a feed, but then i thought babies will makeup what they need at other feeds..?? He was part windy this morning (after last formula feed around midnight) and not that hungry for his breakfast. i could ask DP not to give the formula feed too late so he is hungry at 7am. does anyone think that would work?

thans

another update....

saw the doc this morning. he checked DS's mouth and said he hasnt got thrush. this is a relief as DD had it (after a bout of mastitis) and we really struggled with BF. he thinks the coming on and off is wind due to the one formula bottle i am giving him. the doc also said that some babies 'zigzaged' across the centile chart and they would only worry if he moved out (i.e below) of his birth centile.

i guess i have to wait 2 for the next weighing session..but that will be hard!

has anyone had a similar story??
