Lactaline Diaphragm Sterilisation

Hi

I just got one of these electric breast pumps as the bf seems to be slowing due to baby tongue tied but even after reading the instructions I am not sure if I need to sterilise the diaphragm as well

it feels very fragile

i have a steam steriliser so worried it may damage this delicate piece

any help much appreciated!

Do you mean the bendy part that goes inside the funnel? That definitely needs sterilising. Steam is fine. Cold water sterilising makes it cloudy enventually, but mine still functioned.

thanks for your quick response Grendle!

it looks like a long top hat, it goes in the suction thing which i guess is the funnel

it is not the white pointy piece which goes in the bottle, i will be sterilising that, as it will be in contact with the milk but that too is quite soft

The diaphram will also get milk on it whilst you are pumping. I used a steam steriliser on mine and they are fine.

Yes, it will get milk on it, and is also pressed against your skin, so does need sterilising.

Whilst we're talking about them, it's worth trying the pump with and without the diaphragm fitted. Some mums find one configuration works better or them than the other.

Grendle, she doesn't mean the silicone liner, she means the rubber thin small thing that squeezes small and releases again - it never touches your skin?

The instructions say regular sterilising isn't necessary as milk doesn't reach it. However my milk appears to possess supernatural powers, because it does, on occasion (admittedly if I have leaned the collection kit at a sharp angle) so yeah, I do sterilise it as well. It's no more trouble, and seems a good precaution.

If you ever have any questions about a Lactaline, Ardo Medical (the supplier to all the places that sell them) are great at phone queries. They also sell you spare bits and bobs at lower prices, too.

Aaaah... that bit! Mine got milk on it too, and I always sterilised it as a matter of course without any ill effects. Sorry !

I think she means the bit that sits inside the funnel(it's not called the diaphram though)and that does touch the skin and it does definitely get milk on it during pumping.
