3am feed - what do you read/.watch/listen to?

I have been watching the little TV on my Ipod during middle of the night feeds.

So far I've run through Ugly Betty Series 2 and am now on Ashes to Ashes Series 1.

Ashes to Ashes, although brilliant, is a tiny tad scary for the middle of the night IMO - it's a bit psychological (altho call me a wimp if you like).

Anyway, this got me to thinking ... are others out there watching their Ipod TVs, or listening to the radio or reading books at the 3am feed? If so what programmes, or music, or books have you picked?

right - big vote for brothers and sisters or dirty sexy money if you're watching tv. If youw ant radio I quite like radio five -its factual but interesting in the night. Podcasts I quite like simon mayo ones or the friday night comedy show -also got back into the archers.

On audible booksI quite enjoyed jojo moyes stuff (the sheltering rain saw me through weeks 3 -6)...also anything lighter so caught up on elizabeth chadwick, phillipa gregory etc ((imho if you're doing night feeds and its on ipod you can't be doing with the great works /anything that requires too much thinking).

Frillysocks · 12/04/2009 21:51

Can't watch TV for fear of waking Dh so do Brain training on Nintendo DS instead

Not the hard stuff though, a "mind relaxing" game called Germ Buster

Gives enough light to put boob and baby together too

cariboo · 12/04/2009 21:54

Used to listen to classical music broadcast with weather/precipitation forecast... and never once fell asleep!

FeelingLucky · 12/04/2009 21:59

Used to listen to World Service

NorbertDentressangle · 12/04/2009 22:00

I used to just have the radio on quietly -something mellow like Radio 5.

I discovered early on that Radio 1 during the night used to play pumping rave-type music -not exactly what you want for a relaxed feed in the early hours

Alibabaandthe40bunnies · 12/04/2009 22:00

I don't! I lie dozing trying to keep DS's very hard little toes from digging into my tummy, and hoping that he won't have done a poo because that will mean I have to properly wake up to deal with it.

I now concerned that I'm missing out on valuable brain improving time

TheProvincialLady · 12/04/2009 22:02

With DS1 I started off reading Solzhenitsyn and ended up watching All Creatures Great and Small on DVD!

With DS2 I read a lot of Winifred Holtby because I was given several of her novels for Christmas a week after he was born. And listened to a reading of The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis. Then we learned to feed lying down and now I just sleep if he feeds in the night.

poppy34 · 12/04/2009 22:05

frillysocks I'm in awe of your ability to ds adn feed at teh same time - if yuo do want to ds though, recommend the touchmaster games as they are similarly mind numbing but addictive like germbuster

cariboo · 12/04/2009 22:06

just out of curiousity... how on earth do you manage to read a book & b'feed at the same time??

mawbroon · 12/04/2009 22:06

Nothing. I was always asleep!!

DS could latch on and off himself from a very young age and often in the morning I would have no idea how often he had fed!

mrsbaldwin · 12/04/2009 22:09

Audiobooks! For some reason I hadn't thought of these! I had one - the Sebastian Faulks James Bond book - on my Ipod for the Tube when I was pregnant and really enjoyed that.

Keep 'em coming!

cariboo -I'd love to know how people read/feed-my mothers early suggestion of buying me a reading stand still makes me/dh laugh.

GreenMonkies · 12/04/2009 22:11

ditto Mawbroon, I watched the inside of my eyelids!!

mrsbaldwin · 12/04/2009 22:13

Cariboo - I was multitasking from about the 2nd day of DS little life as had to feed and express simultaneously to get the milk up. Reading a book whilst BF seems easy in comparison to this (although better if they are on the left breast if you are right handed). But Ipods are better than books IMO, as you don't need hands once you've pressed go.

Same here have no idea how often DD3 feeds and at what time, sometimes I will look over at the clock.

I fall asleep with her latched, she must unlatch at some point but I have been woken up by her trying to relatch as well.

stainesmassif · 12/04/2009 22:20

I sleep through his feeds now, but for the first few weeks i recorded series that were just boring enough that it didn't matter if i fell asleep whilst watching - how clean is your house, old location location, jamies dinners, the entire more 4 catalogue really.

love the ipod book idea though, ds always trying to see what's happening over his shoulder if i bf and read.

LenniEd · 12/04/2009 22:20

I used to watch BBC News 24!! Used to make me feel in touch with the world still even though my newspaper reading days were over

cariboo · 12/04/2009 22:21

stop showing off, MrsB. It is physically impossible (unless you're good with your feet) to hold & turn the pages of a paperback while holding your bébé to your bosom!

CMOTdibbler · 12/04/2009 22:24

Rest babies head in crook of arm. Rest elbow on arm of chair. Hold book in that hand. Turn pages with other. Easy. I also read and double pumped.

However in the night, all I ever did was sleep/doze. Why would you try and stay awake ?

poppy34 · 12/04/2009 22:24

[looks critically at mrsb and wonders if she is really superwoman]

you can read an ebook one handed but the selection of books on them are a bit erm... patchy at present (seriously its porn/crap romance, bad thrillers or sci fi)

cariboo · 12/04/2009 22:26

we didn't have any of these fancy e and i contraptions back in 2003

Frillysocks · 12/04/2009 22:31

Thanks poppy34

The recommendation of a new game is great, I wanted something different than Germbuster (have played it to death!) but couldn't spot anything similar, will definitely look up touchmaster.

Used to love a game called Bustamove on Playstation too - so addictive!

suwoo · 12/04/2009 22:34

I'm hoping to finally successfully bf a child this time . I'm quite intrigued after seeing what you lot are managing to watch, but how long does an average feed take? Not like a 5 minute bottle feed I am guessing

I bought myself an ereader for getting through long feeds, but the books it comes with need too much thought for 3am so it's not getting much use! (I must get a book this week that can get me through my holiday)

I'm not usually awake enough to do much though. I have to sit up because of my back (I can't lie on my side) so have to stay awake enough not to fall over but don't want to wake up too much. I've been known to lean forward so I can rest her on my lap (rubbish on my back) or a pillow when I've needed my hands free.
