Which is the best electric breast pump?

struggled to bf ds1 as he was prem, so expressed for 6 weeks using medela lactina which we hired via the hospital. really want to breast feed dc2 and would like to get 'the kit' in prior to its arrival, but was wondering which pump was the best (so i can express for an evening/night feed)? anyone like to share their thoughts?

medela swing? avent isis? any thoughts?

am determined to make bf work for us this time & regret not sticking at it with ds1, so keen to have the best kit to support me in this.

IMO, the best pump is the Ameda Lactaline, which is very reasonable to buy on Ebay.

However, the best thing you can do to maximise your chances of bfing this DC is getting support lined up - find a bf group locally, write the support line numbers somewhere handy etc. Giving a bottle to early, and overnight bottles especially can compromise your chances of bfing successfully, so you might want to think a bit more before doing that

the best kit to support you in it is your BREASTS and the right support
I don't mean to sound flippant, but honestly, making sure you have the best possible chance of feeding your baby direct from the breast is the best was of ensuring a good breastfeeding relationship.

Find out about local breastfeeding groups and, perhaps more important, breastfeeding counsellors.
most groups are open to expectant mums, so why not go along and get yourself known and get some advice before baby is born as well?

is there any reason to suspect that this baby will be premature as well? If so then do lots of research on breastfeeding premature babies, and maybe talk to a BFC about it beforehand.

The NCT hire out electric pumps, which is what I would do rather than buy one as you may not even need it :0

good luck

Ameda Lactaline.. got one, 'tis brill

cariboo · 12/04/2009 20:10

Medela is good but imo Avent hand-job the best!

cariboo · 12/04/2009 20:11

I had to use one because of inverted nips

Advent Isis hand pump worked best for me, I could only get the faintest dribble out with a Medela vs a whole bottle (eventually!) with the hand pump when I needed to express for and in work.
Good luck

I had Avent Isis electric (manual would take ages and make your hands very sore!), it was great but then i've never used anything else... Good luck!

love the medela swing

medela min electric is awful though

BCLass · 13/04/2009 09:50

At the top end I have a Medela feestyle which is brill, but my god its expensive.

foxytocin · 13/04/2009 10:26

Medela is now a WHO Codebreaker. if that sort of thing matters to you when buying a breast pump.

The marketing of their pump is that it is 'stylish' which it is when compared to others.

But stylish and modern looking does not make it more effective than others on the market.

and by golly, the Price! IMO the marketing of the thing is where most of the price of it goes.

A friend of mine got the hard sell from an online company (which I recommended to her and have recommended in the past on MN) trying to push her to buy the Medela.

She didn't buy from that company in the end because of teh hardsell tactics. and she bought a different pump which she is v. happy with.

Medela Swing, had an Avent and hated it.

twinmam · 13/04/2009 10:52

Medela swing for me as well. Rang my NCT helpline to hire an industrial double and it was hideous - looked like it had been produced during the industrial revolution and it chafed my nipples Not saying all NCT branches will have this prob of course but mini electrics not too expensive (worked out no more so than hire in fact)

Ginni · 13/04/2009 13:32

Avent Isis IQ Duo - it's the most expensive by far but also fantastic, I get the impression not many people have tried it because of the cost but you can get them on ebay for around £70. I also have a medela swing btw which I find slow in comparison to my Avent but this could be because my Avent is a double pump. My Medela swing is also very noisy which grates.

BCLass · 13/04/2009 14:31

Foxy - please elaborate on Medela codebreaking?

And stylish?!? OMG when I first used it with the hands free kit DH said I looked like the half woman/half cyberwoman from the Torchwood Cellar. he was not far off...

foxytocin · 13/04/2009 15:48

erm maybe not stylish, but line it up next to the other double leccy pumps and it has a lot more visually going for it.

google is thy friend

foxytocin · 13/04/2009 15:52

i think by stylish I meant: things like compact, lcd screen, touch pads, black modern rucksack looking carrying bag, that sort of thing. the end you stick on your nork can only look one way i s'pose.
