No I WON'T drink my milk!

DS is 10 months and the poor lad is teething - the top lateral incisors are giving me him a lot of grief.

Since Monday, he's been off food, which is not great, but not too much of a problem. But he's refusing his milk as well and only takes in between 7-13 ounces a day. (He usually has between 21-25). And that's with a lot of persuasion. He's not eating much so I can't load him up on weetabix or hide formula in his casserole. How much milk does your 10 month old drink?

Anyone else experienced this? Please tell me it's common enough and in the next few days he'll happily resume normalish feeding (he's not a big eater at the best of times). He won't take juice or water so I'm concerned about dehydration. It's becoming a bit of an issue and I'm a bit nervous that I'm handling this badly and have been making it worse.

My ds1 was only having 1 7oz bottle a day at 10 months, he just wasn't keen on milk once we started weaning, so the solids increased quickly and the milk was lowered very quickly.
When he was and is teething, I never replaced food with milk though, if he didn't eat dinner, he didn't eat dinner that was that.
I wouldn't worry too much atm really. If he doesn't go back to drinking lots of milk, you can replace the calcium with other foods, but I'm sure he'll return to normal in a few days.
I would though, be concerned about the lack of drinking. Again when ds1 was 10 months, he refused water, I wasn't concerned, but he became very constipated and I had to insert pesseries into his rectum for 3 days, awful. I gave squash, just to get him to drink. I know water is ideal and squash isn't, but at least he'd get some fluids.....
I hope it all sorts out soon

And I thought this was going to be someone saying that they had been asked to drink their EBM at an airport or something

It might not just be teething - if he is not eating and is starting to not drink either then it could be a virus and you need to keep an eye on him. It is probably fine but just be aware.

7oz of fluid in a day is not much so if this lasts more than a day or so I would speak to your GP.

Sometimes it is easier to get liquid in little and often, such as an ounce or even half an ounce at a time. You can use a syringe if things get really bad.

is he eating anything? fruit?
try and keep up with the fluids, luckily its not too hot at the moment.

when my dd was teething she once stopped eating solids for a week, but as soon as they cut through she started eating again just as suddenly as she stopped.

I keep telling him that he'll get constipated but he just won't listen .

I get so relieved when I hear about other babies drinking small amounts of formula. But one of my concerns is the calcium - he's dairy intolerant so I can't just give him lumps of cheese. Which he probably wouldn't eat in any case.

I've been through airports with EBM (back in the days when I was still bf) and no-one asked me to drink it. Was disappointed, had been looking forward to that one.

I'm planning to go to the doctor on Wednesday if it's no better. We're visiting the in-laws for Easter and only back home on Tuesday eve.

Kiwi fruit worked for a few meals and then he got fed up with that. I'm going to try cucumber tomorrow.

Today he had half a slice of toast, two bites of potato and one of beef and some spoons of Frutapura. And a few mouthfuls of sushi rice. But he spits out food even if I manage to pop it into his mouth. And 12 ounces milk which I really had to persuade him to take. That can't be enough, can it?

If you're really worried, how about freezing some formula into lollies? He might go for that if he's teething?

PracticalCat · 11/04/2009 22:55

Great idea. Can you freeze formula? He's usually on Neocate, but because he's been refusing I've also been offering Nutrimagen. (Feel very guilty about wasting Neocate). Will it work with these?

Eek - bump for someone who's used it...

But I would have thought it would freeze - maybe make it up with more water than normal, but standard milk would...
