Anti-histamines and BF?

WilfSell · 05/04/2009 22:44

Anyone got any ideas whether I can take Antihistamines or something else (for PLE, sometimes wrongly called prickly heat)

I know that the bottles/packets say don't but then most things say that about BF.

I'm sure some of you with allergies must know? Thanks.

Not sure about antihistamines.

Try contacting the drugs in breastmilk helpline (info given to me by my midwife):

The Breastfeeding Network?s Drugs in breastmilk helpline (0844 412 4665) is available to health professionals who wish to check the safety of drugs to be taken by breastfeeding mothers.

Thanks - I'd forgotten about the BFN's drug advice: will see if they still have a online page also...

Great. just found this leaflet

Advice seems to be that non-sedating AH's are probably safe but as with many drugs, trials haven't been done which limits what manufacturers can say.

toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/f?./temp/~ifsw7S:1 should help.

Thanks Tiktok, very useful link. I think that one is the Piriton stuff? I've also found their summary on loratadine (sp) which is the stuff in Clarityn etc: here

Basic advice I am taking from that is that very little gets into the milk so minimal effect on babies; may have a minor effect on milk supply so since DS is 18m and BF has been going on FOR EVER, I'm probably OK with either.

Will take the tablet after last feed of the day anyhow, to be sure.
