Help!!! Elijah's poo is green!

The poo in his last two nappies has been the colour of mint sauce. A darkish green with yellowy flecks in it. It doesn't smell infected, he's happy, feeding well and has a normal temperature. What is going on?

We never had this, but I know lots of Mumsnetters who did fine with b/f but the baby had green poo from time to time.
I was always led to believe that green poo = starving baby, but I cannot believe that is true in the light of others' experiences.

It's normal! Poo in a breast fed baby can be any colour from green to yellow and back again.

Just one of those things Bubble. It can be a sign of starvation in newborn, but with established breastfed baby you get all sorts of colour of poo. If he is otherwise well do not worry about it.

and did it smell of roses, sally?

Oh, DS2 did this, lots of times. It's gross, but nowhere near as gross as proper poo, once you start weaning.

(I'm starting to thing the best argument for postponing weaning, is postponing having to deal with real poo. Ugh.)

green poo..... I remember that. Can't remember when it stopped but sounds perfectly normal

My ds's poo went like mint sauce and a fantastic experienced midwife asked if i was taking any supplements. I had recently started taking cod liver oil and as soon as I stopped that so did the green poo.

Thanks all. I've done a quick search and it seems that if a baby feeds from the breast and is switched to the other before it gets the hindmilk it can cause green poo. Apparently the foremilk is higher in Lactose which can cause green, frothy poo if the baby doesn't get enough hindmilk to balance it. His poo certainly isn't frothy so I'm not sure if this would account for it but I'm going to make sure I leave him on the breast for long enough before switching to the other.

bubble, have you done the 'crowding round the nappy' thing yet?

DH and I were a bit worried that DS was constipated and we would always stand and examine it for at least 5 mins; inviting anyone else in the house to have a look and through in their tuppence worth as well!
