is it wrong that my 13 month old still has about 21 oz of formula a day.

i went to have dd weighed a few days ago and hv told me that she should only have one bottle a day and this should be whole milk not formula. is she right. she was very bossy and i felt like telling her to piss off but she made me feel that i am doing something wrong

well, she can have cows milk, which is much cheaper than formula, but there is no harm in giving formula. and i think that under 2s are supposed to drink a pint or so a day, or have the equivalent in calcium rich foods

i don;t think it is wrong, some babies and toddlers like milk more than others, DD certainly drank a lot of milk until around age 3

Is it the milk she loves or just a drink from her bottle?

SomeMightSay · 30/03/2009 13:32

I don't suppose you have to move off of formula, most follow-ons say from 6 months to 2 years on the tin, but nutritionally full fat cows milk is fine for a child over 12 months and the amount you give I'd imagine would depend on the amount of food she has and if she wants the milk. My ds1 was on one bottle by 9 months

not sure. think its the milk cos if i put water in her bottle she would rather have it from a cup

Well if she eats well and is gaining weight normally can't see a problem! Does she sleep well?

pud1 · 30/03/2009 13:35

tbh i find formula easier as i only drink skimmed and it would mean me buying skimmed and whole milk.

ILoveTIFFANY - she sleeps fine.

the hv said that she will be getting her vitamins from the formula and not her food. ( she eats well) but then in next breath told me that i should give her vitamin drops.

is it really that much hassle to buy extra milk? i started having full fat organic milk delivered when DD started on regular milk

My ds1 had 21oz of milk per day until he was about 2.5. He did have cows milk not formula, but only because it is cheaper (and we still used to keep a tin of formula in the house for those days when we ran out of milk). I never considered it a problem and I can't imagaine why it would be. DS1 was on the 25th centile for weight (and 75th for height) until he was about 2, when he eventually went up to the 50th centile for weight, so it was hardly having a negative effect on his weight... He enjoyed it and he still enjoys lots of yoghurts in his diet now. No-one ever told us differently, but then ds1 has not seen a HV since he was about 8 months (apart from for his jabs).

thanks Academicmum - dd is on the 25th for weight and 75th for height but i was also a tall thin child. i also loved milk and still do so i am gonna just carry on. will change to cows milk though.
