Breastfed 13 day old - green nappies, slow weight gain - please help

Hello,

My DD is 13 days old. She weighed 6,13 when born and 6,6 at 3 days and 6, 9 at 7 days. She has been weighed today and has only put 1 pound on.

Last week she did a few green nappies and yesterday every nappy was green. I have been very careful during the day to position correctly and am working on this at night (I noticed that she was slipping off at night when I was falling asleep and not latching on very well).

The midwife is coming out again tommorrow and is not worried at this stage.

Please can I have some advice!

Sounds pretty normal to me, DS's nappies went through all colours of the rainbow when he was exclusively BF! Weight gain sounds fine, if the MW's not concerned then I'm sure everything's OK. I'm not an expert though, hopefully someone more knwowledgable will be along in a min...

A pound in weight gain??

A whole pound - in 6 days?

What's the worry?

Green nappies in a thriving baby is not a problem

Notquitegrownup · 30/03/2009 11:33

Oh dear, I'm getting old! My memories of early days are fading, but I am pretty sure that we had green nappies at this stage too, and that they are quite normal.

Bumping for you, for the experts/those at the same stage as you.

tree - feel free, am on laptop for the next 15 mins or so

Bless you - it's in this topic 'vinegar poo'.

An ounze, I dunno, my dd1 would put on 1 one week and 6 the next. Others will advise with more knowledge however. But you keep going girl - it can all be worked out with a bit of input and assisstance. It's bloody exhausting though!

Oh an ounce - did rather wonder what you were worried about with a pound!!

OK...this weight gain is a tad slow but it is a gain.

Can you feed her more often, using at least two breasts per feed? This will help ensure she gets the opportunity for more milk if she needs it.

Has she ever done yellow nappies?

NBM · 30/03/2009 12:01

Tiktok,

Yes she was doing yellow poos.

I have been advised to feed her on one breast and when she comes off, change her nappy and put her back on if she is unsettled, mouthing etc (same side if less than 15 minute feed) - What do you think?

Who's told you that, NBM? It's not that it's terribly wrong, but it doesn't really reflect what we know about how bf works.

The best way to get bf off to a good start and to ensure lots of milk is made in response to the baby's needs is to forget the clock and to watch the baby's behaviour. 15 mins on one breast is too long for some babies some of the time, and not enough for some babies some of the time. Daft to watch the clock....really is.

Feed your baby on one side, and then swap and offer the other side when you judge from the baby's behaviour that she has taken what she wants on that side. Change her nappy if you want - not important She may want a natural break before going on again, and ok, change her nappy in the break. Offer the other side. In your case, because the weight gain is a touch slow, it would be a good idea to offer the first side again after she has slowed down on the second side, unless she is truly zonked out and not interested.

She may be fine and a naturally slow gainer, but it will not harm at all to take the initiative somewhat to ensure she has plenty of chances to feed as much as she would like to.

Tiktok - Breastfeeding support and the MW agreed with this! I will try the way you have suggested. Thank you.

NBM - don't change anything because of what I said here, if you have been told something different. I was speaking from the info you have shared here only; I have not seen your baby and I may not have the whole picture. For all I know, there is a reason why you have been told the 15 mins thing...do check things out with the midwife
