Baby not fed yet, 24 hours old?

Is this OK? I'm asking for my sil, because I think she's a bit worried about it. My instinct is that it's fine, and early days etc, but wanted to check. Any tips?

Call the midwife. I think this is quite dangerous as they can get dehydrated. Do it now.

Not ok from now on though. Is she skin-to-skin? Keep baby's mouth near mum's nipple so he/she can latch on whenever he/she stirs.

If he's drowsy from low blood sugar, your SIL may find she can get him to take some by sitting up in bed with her knees bent and baby on her knees, then expressing drips of colostrum onto her little finger and putting them just inside the baby's mouth. Do that enough and he/she may stir enough to try to latch on.

Did she have any drugs during the birth?

Minky, this baby definitely needs to feed. It is not fine for babies to go this long without anything. Most will be ok and will perk up, but we don't know in advance which ones won't.

Lindenlass's suggestions are good. Main thing is to keep mum and baby close together, and yes, by now, to ensure the baby gets some colostrum somehow.

i wiuld worry oif the baby is floppy- my ds1 didn't feed for 24hrs and he went very floppy.

MW wanted to give him a bottle of formula, but i insisted they help me BF. Sadly the advice was poor and they didn't help me much, so he ended up having cups of formula.

We did find a lovely BF support MW who sorted it all out for us- but not after alot of struggle.

I'd advise her to get some advice form MW/BF support etc where she is.

Good luck

Not OK.
I would even consider trying to hand express and syringe feed if dripping doesn't work.
I pumped and syringe fed on MW advice when baby wouldn't latch on at around 15-18 hours (after initially feeding at birth).

When I had my son I was (luckily) kept in hospital for an extra day due to premature rupture of membranes and risk of infection. My ds fed for about 2 seconds after the birth - prod didn't even get any milk, but the midwife seemed to think this was ok. I then went through a day of trying to feed him with no joy, and having tiny amounts of milk squeezed out of me and syringed into his mouth. I kept getting told this was fine. The next day he was jittery, jaundiced, having no wet nappies, and when I finally begged them to do something, they took blood and his blood sugar was dangerously low. He was very drowsy and it was a struggle to even get him to take a bottle. Luckily he is ok now, but all I can say is just make sure that baby gets fed one way or the othere asap! Even if it's just formula to get his blood sugar up!

Also, if she has to give him formula, it does not mean that he has to be formula fed from then on. I gave it to my son that once, then persevered with the breast feeding and it was fine - in fact he was on there all the time!

Thanks, now she's hand expressing and seems to be having a little success. I don't think there were any drugs, but a pretty traumatic ventuse birth, plus they think she's full of mucus for some reason. She's a bruiser though 8lb9oz!

If she is full of mucous then that will be why she is not latching on probably - I think that was the problem with my ds. Took him a few days and a few vomits (lol) to clear it!

MinkyBorage · 26/03/2009 11:44

Thanks, I'll pass that on.

Not okay!!!! I went home with my baby the morning after the birth and at home she would not feed for 7 hours was too sleepy to latch on or take formula, and I called the hospital she was born at, the same ward and they said bring her in straight away and addmitted me overnight to get feeding established and check for dehydration and low blood sugar test. I hope you have passed it on and the baby is getting help now.
