Antibiotics and BF

Hi all,

I posted before my baby was born asking people to persuade me to bf again and got some great responses so I'm back for help!

I had a little boy on the 13th, he's a sweetie and I did start bf again. He's the same as his sister, a hungry little monster who is never off the boob, lol.

I had to have an emergency section and have been having healing issues, so my mw has put me on antibiotics just in case of infection. She says they are ok to use while bf but I think I'm starting to have a funny reaction to one of them.

If they're upsetting me, will they upset ds? They're affecting my stomach and he's windy enough as it is.

I'm probably panicking over nothing, thought you were calmer with your second but obviously not!

Watch out for thrush. I got this as a result of taking antibiotics early on.

You can get something called Acidophilous (sp similar) tablets from health food shop which can help guard against it. Keeps your bacteria in balance!

Different AB's have different affects, but speak to MW or HV if you are concerned.

Good luck with all of it (smile).

Do you know what you're on? I took AB's after I had DS because my c-scar got infected. They did give him the shits, but I needed to heal.

Talk to your GP if you are really bothered.

They're called Metronidazole and are 400mg tablets.

I asked my mw today (STILL not healing!) and she just said that I could stop taking them if I wanted to (!!) and that they may make my milk sour which would unsettle ds.

Not sure what to do but I'm seeing the GP so I could asking her too. Ds has been really funny today, pulling off and crying then frantically trying to re-latch which has made me sore as hell and him very unhappy

toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/f?./temp/~ugT8zR:1 has some good references. Nothing about making the milk sour as far as I can see, though.

They are not the only ABs you can take if you are unhappy about using them, and of course if they are being used solely as a prevention, you can indeed choose not to use them, or ask for another type of AB.

Thanks again - GP has changed them and tells me that the new ones should not affect bfing.

stop taking metrodiazonole. I took them, after birth too. they said they were safe but my baby was quite ill with what i thought was lactose overload with them. Green poo very unsettled. Then when i started weaning it was clear he was dairy intolerant. I'm sure it was down to metrodiazonole.

I now give him Bifidabacterium infantis powder, but you can take it now and it will pass through your breast milk. it will help rebalance the gut flora in both you and baby.

good luck

kalo12 · 27/03/2009 10:30

also he had exaclty that, pulling off then trying to relatch again. i think it makes them temporarily lactose intolerant.

i carried on eating dairy whilst breast feeding and he seemd ok with that but it might be an option for you to stop it and see how he fares.

Yikes, kalo....I know you mean to help but you can't tell someone not to take meds simply because of what happened to you

kalo12 · 27/03/2009 16:15

oh sorry. I realise I am being alarmist. but only in the context that this is a website discussion and I am assuming the op will take a balanced view from all the posts.

What I mean is that the Metrodianazole is bad. Other anti biotics are ok.

I wish someone had told me to stop taking them. The (extensive and obsessive) research I did into them showed they were infact not really safe for breastfeeding. Safe being a value term where you assess your own definition of danger and concern.

I too was given anti biotics 'incase ' I got an infection rather than a proven infection. In this case it is perfectly safe to stop taking ABs before you have finished the course as there is no bacterial infection to mutate.
