Should I try a dummy?

Some advice needed! DD is 13 weeks, and still not in any particular pattern at night but recently has started doing one longer stretch to start with, then waking up every 2 hours (or less, sometimes), feeding for about 4 or 5 minutes then off again. I don't know whether she's just waking up and using bf to get herself back to sleep again or is actually hungry - seems like not long to feed if she was??

I've never tried a dummy with her so far, but wondering whether if she needs to suck to go back to sleep it's worth a try?

Dunno why I've been so resistant to the idea so far either. Somewhere I seem to have absorbed the idea that dummies = bad but I don't really know why.

Have you tried just rocking her back to sleep? The trouble with dummies is that even if she does go to sleep with it it would probably fall out again and then she'd wake up again 10 mins later.. If rocking doesn't work perhaps she really is hungry.

I used dummies with DS1 and with DD (14 weeks) (ds2 never wanted or needed one)
To be honest I would be lost without it. I had my finger stuck in DD's mouth or she was stuck on my boob for the 1st couple of weeks = sore boobs.
Some babies are just more 'sucky' than others and need that comfort.
I would give it a go, she might take it, she might not.
The problem only comes when you are not strict with them and battle to take them away when they get older, but to be honest DS1 gave his up much easier than I expected.

I gave my first dd a dummy, she hated it and soon found her thumb instead!
dd2 loved her dummy adn it saved us many a sleepless night, she never cried when it fell out and just stopped having on at about 6months.
ds, now 6 weeks, takes one but spits it out after a few mins!
give it a go, I have found them very helpful.

PartOfTheHumphreysGroup - yes last night I sort of rocked her moses basket (not that it's on rockers...!) and she went back to sleep for an hour, which is what made me think that sometimes (if not always) she's not really hungry, just needs the help to sleep.

She also won't nap in the day (unless in car/ pram etc) without being fed to sleep. Since this is sometimes only 1 hour after she's fed, again I think it's more the comfort than hunger.

WEll I think I'm going to give it a go - nothing ventured, nothing gained! Thanks for advice.

I had the same with dd2 and it works . We only give it to her when she is grumpy before sleep and If I try to rock her she gets mighty cross as she wants the boob. At night she spits it out when she has had enough and doesn't cry to have it back again - ONly after feeding at 3 am and she wants to stay on the boob. I am a convert after being so against it !

rlightMcKenzie - I totally agree that if she's hungry that's just the way it is - but she used to feed every 3 hours rather than every 2. I actually think I could probably help it by gently waking her enough to feed a little bit more when she conks out after 4 minutes. She used to do about 8 and that kept her going for 3 hours so it's probably worth trying that first.
