A friend of mine saw a HV yesterday. She's BF and topping up with Soya formula as her DS is lactose intollerant and has dropped from the 75th to 25th percentile.

HV told her that Soya Formula could make her DS infertile.

She's pretty confident that this is a load of rubbish but when you're worried about your baby anyway this was just another thing...

wb apparently, the reason palces like china and japan don't have a huge amount of male infertility is because they mainly eat fermented soya products.
and the fermentation process helps. or something,.
over here most of our soya is just plain bog-standard stuff.

That's interesting iwontbite, didn't know that.

The other concerns about soya formula include the fact it is top-loaded with a lot of sugar, in order to make it remotely palatable. This becomes significant when the baby gets teeth.

The aluminium content of soya formula is also high, and this is thought to be inadvisable.

None of these drawbacks mean no baby should ever have soya formula, but it does mean the 'casual' use of it is not a good thing - official guidance is pretty clear that it should only ever be used with medical backing.

Hi all,

Thanks for the messages. Yes had spoken to NCT breast feeding councellor a while back and she was pretty unhelpful, just wanted to get off the phone. Didn't tell me anything I didn't already know and despite me trying all the recommended things it never improved. He used to get really frustrated (hence the one top up bottle of soya a day), but now he is on solids he is really happy. I have no worries or concerns about him, he is doing great and looks really chubby so I was suprised he still hadn't gained some more weight last week.

I have been to the GP twice to get the hypoallergenic formula but they haven't wanted to prescribe it. One said he wasn't experienced in it, the other just referred me to the paediatrician. He knew I was using soya and said to carry on!!! Hopefully the dietician will have some more advice this week, and the paediatrician appointment will happen soon.

Hi there, just a quick tip when you do manage to get the hypoallergenic stuff. It tastes pretty vile and it takes a while to pursuade lo's to drink it, so you might want to try continuing with the soya formula and switching 1oz at a time for the hypoallergenic stuff over a series of days. This allows them to slowly accept the taste. Good luck!
