BF 2wo gulping feeds, horrible wind, sick and colic

Can anyone offer suggestions of help please? I'm finding all this quite frightening, especially the sickness.

My 2wo DD gulps down her milk (I think I have a very good supply), esp in the morning, you can actually hear the milk and air going down inside her body. My DS never had a problem (tho was a frezied feeder).

I'm using Infracol but still don't seem to be able to wind her effectively (inc trying the "tiger in the tree" and doing circular rubs on her back, over my shoulder).

Last night she screamed between 6am and 11pm, with a feed in the middle, then went to sleep (on my tummy in the dark) after another feed. I assume this is colic? It has only come on in the last 3 days.

Fed again at 2.30am, no luck getting up any wind, and as she was peaceful I put her down to sleep. Then as 6am found she had been very sick in the night. Which is frightening, she could have choked. She's only been sick once before (probably due to a mild curry that I had).

Again this morning she is gulping down her feeds.

Maybe you have a fast let down and she finds it hard to cope with the gush? Try feeding and leaning back so the flow isn't so fast? She's also still learning about bf, so her technique for dealing with it will improve. It's quite normal to hear the milk glugging down and it doesn't necessarily mean she's got wind.

If it is fast let down I'm sure there'll be other people who have other techniques to try.

Good luck, it can all be solved with a few tweaks here and there.

oh, and the sick probably wasn't anything to do with the curry you ate.

IMO she's unlikely to choke - babies are born with a cough reflex and can puke up while lying on their backs fairly effieicently - and sleep through it like your dd did!

Have you tried latching her on in a "sitting up" position? You sit up straight and put her bottom between your legs so she is much mote upright. That may help.

Or latching her on until the first gulps are heard - and taking her off then - to let the flood of milk that comes with a let down gush out (all over the bed/chair/carpet ) and then re-attaching her.

Both of these might help.

I hadn't heard of the cough reflex - that's a relief, I am so worried about her dying.

I think it probably is a fast let down - I'll try both approaches suggested - ILTMIMI: do you mean that I need to lean back, with her sort of lying on top of me? This morning I did try feeding her with her sitting up a bit: gagarin - so she "sits" facing me?

Any hints on winding? Something must be causing hiccups and the wild screaming.

You lean back and bring baby to you. The theory being the milk sort of has to go up hill so slows down - iyswim.

I haven't had let down problems, but look here This site is fantastic.

I just had to sit ds's up and they would burp, no rubbing or patting required. Again, have a look on the above site for some idea's.

jaz, check out info on over-supply...could be this your baby's experiencing.

I had a very fast let down too and DD would often choke. I found that if I hand expressed first to get rid of the initial fast flow (when the milk would shoot out horizontally!), and then put her on once it had calmed down, that stopped the choking and gulping. Good luck!

Hi my DS used to choke on the flow, I used to take him off while it squirted and then put him back on. He also choked on his refluxed milk, very bad sometimes. At about 12 weeks he got used to the flow. My DS, now 4 months, has reflux and is on meds, he was very very irritable all day from about 3/4 weeks. I could hear milk violently coming up and him gulping it back down, also choking/gagging daily inc in his sleep.

Thanks for all the advice: I'll look up the info you suggest. Today has been rather fraught, but DD is sleeping now - no screaming this evening. Heaven knows what's going on (maybe she'll do ger screaming after midnight tonight !) - I'll just make the most of an early night.
