Rooting then screaming on the boob

Every so often DS, 11 weeks, goes through a phase of this and it is the most unbelievably frustrating experience that has literally had me walking away and screaming myself. I've left him next door with his sister after the latest episode and have come to ask advice from all you wise MNers.

He's a very big, hungry baby, 99% BF and with a touch of colic-cum-wind. He's not classically colicky but does have tummy gripes not infrequently. DH reckons it might be because he doesn't like going horizontal to feed, but the only way round that is to express and feed him that way on bad days, but oddly enough on these bad days he's been known to refuse EBM and happily take formula - ?? I've given him a handful of formula feeds in his 11 weeks usually when he won't take in nutrition any other way. I have gallons of milk and usually his feeding technique is excellent.

I'll try him again in 5 mins or so. Usually when this happens I go for a walk about the house with him and he calms instantly, then we try again, and sometimes I have to give up completely. Last time he went the best part of 24 hours like this and ended up necking 7oz of formula when he was screaming the house down, was bright purple and wouldn't touch boob but was plainly ravenous.

Any ideas??

is it poss a forcefull letdown that he doesn't like? If you have an abundant supply it could be this. however im not an expert so hopefully tiktok or someone will bne along shortly. if it is thizs then i think its been daid on here to express a little bit off first and then try him on the boob. My ds2 did similar but when he was 4 months so i think it was a growth spurt and the frustration of not getting the milk quick enough. i did supplement but would then express after he was settled so as to keep supply up and thankfully its not mucked my supply up as i only did tha off and on few a week or so and then was able to go back to bf with 1 ff on eve.
have you checked out {www.kellymom.com} it usually helps with most bf issues.

My dd does this when she has wind. I call this behaviour "bopping on the boob" and as soon as she starts I get her off to avoid sore nipples and start winding her until either a nice burp or poop comes out, or she falls asleep. I know that if I let her carry on feeding she'll just be uncomfortable and screaming in between gulping down the food, and will probably regurgitate it all anyway. If I think she's got wind then i'll do the windmill/bicycle moves to help work the poops out of her. She does get terrible wind/colic, it's much better no than she was in that when we wind her it has an effect much quicker than it used to, she used to be in absolute agony with it and there wasn't much we could do to help her (dd is now 11 weeks too).
