Nicotine patches and breastfeeding.

Finally plucked up the courage to go to the smoking cessation clinic today and they won't prescribe me patches. I rang the bfn drugline and they said they were fine. Lactmed says it is fine except for the link btw nicotine and sids, which I wouldn't think was a big issue as DD is 19 months. I want to go back and ask them to prescribe the patches but what evidence should I take with me? I want the patches with inhalator as back up, they want me to just have the inhalator. I am so frustrated, it took me ages to work up to going and now I feel like it's not going to work.

Char, take the print outs from the web with you, and go back. Alternatively, you can get patches prescribed by your GP.

Then when you are sorted, write to the PCT and point out the ludicrousness of the clinic's stance.

CharCharGabor · 16/03/2009 12:42

Do you think the printouts will work then? It was the GP who refused them, the advisor was willing to give me them but just wanted to double check with him. I did find it bizarre tbh, I said to the woman so I could have morphine after a csection and bf a newborn but I can't have patches? Grrr.

I don't know if the print outs will work - it depends how bone-headed they are! You can at least as the GP to check with a colleague.

Bugger, can't print it off. Will have to take links in and tell them to have a look themselves. Thanks for your help tiktok

If not, suggest they phone the BfN drugline themselves and speak to the pharmacist. It's there primarily for health professionals.

Hope you get it sorted.

CharCharGabor · 16/03/2009 19:09

Thanks Grendle. I took in some information I'd written down from lactmed and bfn, along with the drugline number. Have another appointment tomorrow afternoon with another doctor who is willing to discuss it with me. The advisor was so helpful

CharChar

You can quit cigarettes without nicotine replacement therapy.

Makes it easier in the long run.

Don't be scared.

CharCharGabor · 16/03/2009 20:27

I know but I've tried that a few times and failed miserably though so I thought I'd give this a go. Back to that if this doesn't work though

Good luck with it.

I speak as the veteran of 7 attempts!! All without nrt. Imho (and it is only my opinion, I know its not the same for all) niccotine addiction is only a tiny part of the reason why people smoke.

Anyway, am not about to start lecturing you. Just wish you every success, however you do it. There's a website, whyquit, I think, which makes for diverting reading when you find yourself craving a fag!

CharCharGabor · 16/03/2009 21:26

Thanks for that Mintyy I'll have a look at the website. One of the main reasons for trying the nrt is I want to be less ratty with DD wile quitting. I have a tendency to be irritable anyway and I don't want her to bear the brunt of it! Hopefully I will be successful, but if not I may be back to pick your brains

If they won't prescribe you can always buy it otc....cheaper then fags in the long run!
