dd4 is slow to gain weight, could it be linked to her not sleeping?

dd4 now gains 2-4oz on average per week. she is slowly dipping down the breastfed baby charts, and has gone through 2 lines. was 9lb 2.5 at birth, at `16 weeks was 12lb 10. so she isnt teeny and looks chunky and doing well.

the problem is, some hv's are getting twitchy about her weight.

my problem is she doesnt sleep well. she wakes 3-5 times between 11 and 7, and rarely sleeps longer than 30mins in the day, maybe twice a day.

as you can probably guess, i am shattered.

she feeds well, latch is good, dirty wet nappies, fontelle is great.

Catchdown growth? 9.2 is quite big so she could just be finding her own growth line.

Ds also didn't sleep well during the day (I think he had his first 2 hr nap when he was about 18 months old..) and he followed the 50th centile until he was about 10 months.

misdee, this weight and weight gain are on the normal spectrum. If you or the HVs think she needs more calories (which she probably does not, given you are presumably feeding responsively), you could offer both sides or even three or four sides each time....just to see if she needs more. She will prob refuse, but you will have something to 'prove' to the HVs that she's fine (if you feel you need to prove anything!).

Catchdown growth is indeed very likely - it's esp common in babies who were bigger than av. at birth.

ooops....

hv said they tend to follow babies weight from 6 week post birth as it gives time for cath down.up growth.

dd4 is just slowly slipping down. she is gaining s am not overly concerned.

what does worry me is that she cant sleep. she was up 4 times last night, and had a cat nap of 10mins since 7am.

would i be mad to go to gp saing my baby wont sleep?

Does she sleep ok if she is in bed with you, misdee?

MamaG · 16/03/2009 09:43

misdee, my baby doesn't nap much during the day unless he's been out in the pram. AT night though, he will sleep for much of hte night, just waking once or twice for a feed. We co-sleep and I think its hte closeness of me that gets him off.

misdee · 16/03/2009 09:45

nope. we co-sleep now as means i get some sleep. she is rather 'snorty' and snores v loud.

she cant lie flat a chokes and screams. am buying a baby hammock this week to see if that helps.

what i mean is, i'm not concerend. she feeds well, if too frequently (sometimes manages just an hour between long feeds).

i'm just worried in case her not sleeping means she is using too much energy for her to put just a little bit more weight on iyswim.

hv said 'oh bfed babes are lighter anyway, and these charts arent really for exc bfed babies. till i pointed out we were using the bfed chart, when she said 'we'll just keep an eye, just pop down once a month to every 6 weeks.

so they arent too concerned think.
