Firstly, can i just say i know it's early days.
Ds2 was born nearly 4 weeks early but has been putting on weight like there is no tomorrow.
He was 11lb 2oz 2 weeks ago.
He manages to go roughly 4 hours during the day between feeds sometimes longer if we are out and about and he is asleep. He is on 5oz bottles of Cow & Gate comfort, which on the whole he finishes.
We have tried 6oz but it is making his reflux worse and its just too much for him at the moment.
How do i get him to stretch out the feeds at night time?(magic wand anyone?)
His feeding times look like this:

2.00 am
6.30 am
10.00 am
2.00 pm
5.00 pm
7.00 pm
11.00 pm

Can you tell me if i can do anything different?
Thankyou.

nobodysfool - this is a normal and not very demanding pattern for a baby of this age...sorry if that's not what you want to hear!

He is waking up once in the night - many babies wake more often than this, and in addition feed on and off in the evenings.

It is easier to change your expectations and the way you cope with his normal waking, than to get a very young baby to change his needs....that sounds far bossier than I intend, sorry, but it's the truth

If he has reflux, then maybe this is the pattern that's more comfortable for him, anyway.

Im not sure - he is only 4 weeks yes? And only feeding once at night? Think that is about as stretched as most babies get? His tummy is still tiny so can only hold so much milk. I do understand the sleep deprivation though - DD can easily feed every 2 hours at 6 months (very exhausted looking smiley)

xx

I know i know your right (not bossy at all) but i was just hoping that somebody would have a solution that would help a bit.
He really is a little angel, he is not demanding in anyway and falls to sleep at the drop of a hat when tired-total opposite to ds1.
When he wakes a the 2am feed he just wants to get it over an done with and go back to sleep.
Just cant remember when they normally drop the 2am feed.

OP's baby is 10 weeks, peppa, born 4 weeks early....so sort of 6 weeks But even for a 'proper' 10 week baby he's not doing anything unusual.

nobodysfool · 13/03/2009 09:42

Peppa-he is 10 weeks old (love the name)

nobodysfool - you are asking for a 'solution' to something that's not a problem

  • he's 10 weeks - very young
  • he has reflux - so messing about with his needs could make him uncomfortable
  • he feeds well and settles just fine
  • in time, he may go through the night but it still wouldn't be unusual if that was months away still

Aw don't crawl off under a stone! Head for the duvet instead if your dc1 isn't around and needing entertaining. You have a ten week old, and coped with a baby 4 weeks early. Your body is starting to scream for sleep. Find a way of getting some extra, in the daytime, or by going to bed at 8pm a few times, and topping up your sleep. It could be weeks until he drops the 2am feed - look after yourself in the meantime.

nobodysfool · 13/03/2009 09:58

Thankyou.
Ds is at nursery this morning so may get a short nap before he comes home.
I think my body is struggling as well, i had a whole list of complications during this preg and was meant to have a planned section but this little man was eager to arrive so ended up having 12 hours full blown labour as the specialist team wasnt in till the morning.Had a big blood loss and all the stress of ds2 going in Special care.Just want to make sure i'm doing right by him.

Poor you! He sounds as if he is doing brilliantly - thanks to you, of course. Are your iron levels being monitored too, if not, do ask your health visitor/GP to check? As well as sleep, iron and chocolate are IME, very important to well being, in these early days.

KiwiPanda · 13/03/2009 10:48

If it makes you feel any better, 12 week old DD still only goes 3 hours at night between feeds and usually 2 in the daytime...

Was actually going to post to see if I could get any top tips myself but not sure there is anything that I can do??

She doesn't really have a set pattern in terms of times but lst night fairly typical - fed at 7, slept at 8, fed at 11, 2, 5, 8 etc etc...

What I would give for more than 2 hours sleep at a time... so basically I envy you!

moaningminnie2020 · 13/03/2009 10:49

If it cheers you up a bit, my 12wo DS has slept from 11.30pm til 6am about 5 nights out of the last 7, it was a very nice surprise to me as DD didn't slept through at all til gone 6 months, and only reliably slept through from 12mo.

It might be just around the corner...

Kiwipanda-i forgot to mention because of his floppy larynx his feeds take an hour so i feel your pain with the no more than 2 sllep at any time.Lets hope things settle for you soon.x

moany-keep your fingers crossed for me.It certainly would be a lovely surprise.
