Night feeding 4 month old

I was just wondering whether anyone has any tips on how to reduce night feeding.

My 19 week old son after a growth spurt has been waking for a feed at 10.30pm and 2.30am, but now this is affecting his daytime milk intake. For example today he had 1oz at 7am and 2oz at 10.30, only because I offered it to him, and at 1.30 he had a 5oz feed. Has anyone got any gentle ways, if there is any, to encoursge feeding in the day.

Thanks in advance

Sorry, I can't help. My 7-month old still feeds once or twice a night. He is BF though.

i think it is way to early to cut out night feeding, if he is waking and taking milk, 4 monhts is v v early to expect him to totally differentiate between day and night .

sounds like he is taking smallish amounts of milk during the day.. what is he taking at night>

but really it is too soon to try to cut out night feeds, there will be more growth spurts !

you are really only having one nightfeed anyway at 2.30 am , and that won;t really affect his intake at the 7 am feed.

DS only stopped night feeding at 8 months (bf)

At night he takes a 6oz bottle and I am sure it does affect his intake at 7am because he would happily wait to lunch time for any milk unless I offered it to him.

I realise he will have more growth spurts which is why I was looking for gentle ways to encourage feeding in the day.

I guess I finding it abit unusual as I have 3 other children and they would have a nightfeed but still take milk regularly thoughout the day. Suppose they are all different. I have no problem with feeding him at night I just would like him to feed more in the day.

I am looking after 18 week old twins who are feeding at 7, 10.30 2.30 and 6pm, they then have a dream feed at 11pm and sleep through usually till 6/7 ish though one of them was waking around 4 am until recently.

If you are only doing one night feed that is pretty good. My ds was still having one night feed at 8 months.

mummymimi · 12/03/2009 20:41

With your ds would he still feed at breakfast time?

I guess if I was breastfeeding I would feed when hungry and not be concerned with the volume as I wouldn't be able to see it.

Yes he still fed at breakfast but the night feed was very quick so he was hungry again by 7 am.

mummymimi · 12/03/2009 20:55

Maybe I should give him a liitle less at 2.30am? I take it you breastfed?

Yes I did bf and also the twins are bf but one of them (the one who was waking up) has a formula feed at 6pm of around 9oz.

You could try and give him less and see if he settles.

mummymimi - my DS is also 19 weeks and we have just had a HUGE growth spurt including increased night feeding and lack of interest during the day. But last night he suddenly slept through again (well 11.30 till 6am) and today he just took the milk nicely during the day without any issues.

So maybe time is your only answer.

mummymimi · 13/03/2009 14:54

Thanks for all your comments.

saladsucks - I think you are right - last night he slept an hour longer until 3.30am and took 4oz and today he wasnt interested at 7am but by 9.30am he was hungry and had a 6oz feed. Will see how tonight goes.

When my older children had growth spurts they would feed all day and night.
