Is baby rice in bottle ok, then?

It is according to a mum I met at BabyCafe this morning.
She insisted (loudly, to our end of the room) that the advice has changed, and that "several of the girls" had recently been advised by Health Professionals that it was ok to put baby rice in a bottle, from age of ~4 months.
I privately reckoned that the woman saying this was mad, but perhaps I am the one who is misinformed?

This is what kellymom says about it:

Doctors and other experts recommend that you never give baby cereal in a bottle unless recommended by baby's doctor for a specific medical condition. Here are some of their reasons:

  • It is a choking hazard.

  • The cereal takes away from the amount of milk in the bottle (adds carbohydrates and dilutes the nutrient density), and baby may not get adequate milk volume for proper growth and development.

  • Baby is being given a higher concentration of calories without being able to regulate her own intake. This can lead to weight problems in the future.

Sorry but she is talking shit rubbish

No. Never unless very specifically for reflux, and even then there are better solutions. Theres a choking risk for a start, plus its adding non milk before 6 months - therefore starting weaning. I think there was also a study that showed that it affected appetite regulation.

If you see her again, ask her who it was that said it 'as you are interested', and then if possible ask them for the evidence base for this info

Phew,thanks for replies.
I didn't expect to hear such tripe at a breastfeeding group, ffs.
This came on top of comments about how she had never made a lot of mistakes that new mums make because she listened to every bit of advice her mum gave her about "Not making a rod for your own back", which is why her children never had sleep problems, blar-de-blar.
I thought that was extra insensitive with some new mums there who are struggling with breastfeeding and sleep and the shell-shock of new baby, to be told they are making lots of mistakes, too, that's why they're finding it tough. (or maybe that's just how I would have taken it if I were a brand-new mum).

I'm not really a public confrontation person, but I did quietly say to an exhausted new mum with a 10-day-old and say something about how "You know what that lady was saying isn't the only right way to do things, don't you?" Thankfully, she said she hadn't taken the other woman's comments very seriously.

I believe it is advised, or at least common practice, in the rest of Europe. But definitely not here, and I'm inclined to believe the UK advice as it makes sense - for the reasons posted earlier, but also because how would you go about getting cereal or rice into your breasts?? And since a bottle is basically an emulated breast it makes sense (to me) that it should only ever contain milk, or water.

CherryChoc · 12/03/2009 19:53

Sorry, meant to add:

...since that is all babies are designed to be drinking from breasts anyway.

(I know not water strictly speaking but breastmilk changes its consistency from more watery to more fatty anyway)
