How long before throwing away milk?

I always thought you had to throw away formula after 1 hour and breast milk after 2 hours.

However, on the side of the Aptamil box it states discard as soon as possible, always within 2 hours.
Midwife says she thought it was 2 hours, but her daughter says 1 hour.
Searching on the net I'm getting all sorts of answers, from immediately to 3-4 hours!! One site did say 1 hour if your baby had touched it, and 2 hours if untouched, which seems to make sense.

I didn't have this problem with DS1, he took what he wanted and wouldn't go back to it. DS2 is a little and often man!!

So what do you personally do?

Can you not just make up smaller bottles?

horsemadgal · 11/03/2009 12:29

Well that's what I have been doing, but would need around 24 a day!! I'm sick of washing bottles, hence the question

Ah fair enough. Does your DS drink it at room or fridge temp or do you heat it?

Seona1973 · 11/03/2009 12:36

they used to say 1 hour but with the new guidelines about making up fresh each time with 70 degree water they seem to have increased the time to 2 hours.

Have you tried a faster teat btw?

No idea about formula, but the breastmilk after 2 hours isn't true.

Kellymom has a bit about it

throckenholt · 11/03/2009 12:58

breast milk can last a few days - but varies from person to person.

mawbroon · 11/03/2009 13:03

throckenholt - I think OP is talking about milk left after it has been drunk from.

throckenholt · 11/03/2009 13:07

ah - yes - ok well if he has that tendency then just give him a little bit and top it up if he drinks it all. Nothing more soul-destroying than throwing away expressed milk IME.

horsemadgal · 11/03/2009 13:57

Thanks all.
DS drinks the formula at room temperature and the breast milk usually heated.
Not too worried about the breast milk (interesting link though thanks) as I am getting so little that he wolfs the lot usually right away.
I tried a faster teat but it was just choking him.
He's only 3.5 weeks just now so assume he will get better at taking bigger quantities at one time.

When my daugher was a baby, depending on the temperature it would be 2 hours on a hot day and 3 on a cool day before i would chuck it out. My father in law is a GP and told me that it was perfectly ok to do this, and just to my discretion. The usual time is 1 hour but they say this to cover their backs. I have sometimes left a bottle all night with milk (the temp was cool), my daughter has never ever been sick because of this.

horsemadgal · 13/03/2009 20:23

Thanks piglet, keeping it for the 2 hours would make my life much easier.
A friend just told me today that she would keep the same bottle in use the whole night also.

It is absolutely fine, I have medical support for this, my daughter is 2 now, it saves a lot of money and during the night, time to, not keep going down and making a feed. However if it is a hot night i would be more cautious.

pigletmania · 13/03/2009 22:05

Though saying that,I was using Aptimil, in malta in the summer 2007, the temps were really hot. As they have big town houses there with lots of steps, i did not want to go down in the night so would make a bottle or two for during the night and they were fine. We were staying with my in laws(who are Maltese) and my father in law(a GP) said that it was fine too.

horsemadgal · 14/03/2009 11:49

Fab, thanks again piglet.
OO I don't like the getting out of bed in the night, I keep the bottles and tub of formula on my bedside cabinet. Trouble is this wee monkey of mine likes to poo during the night!!
