Sick after every feed - Worried

KT1983 · 11/03/2009 07:22

My baby is 4 weeks old on Friday and up until now we have had little problems feeding apart from being very greedy ( bottle fed ) She started on 2/3oz and is now asking for 4/5oz - Which I think is too much, but my HV said if she wants it then give it to her. So she is taking this amount every 3.5 hours approx.

The last few days she has been sick after almost every feed. Not just a small amount but it looks like the whole bottle. I had her sat up for about 30mins this morning, then went to change her and she was sick EVERYWHERE!!!
Its really starting to worry me. Do you think she is just being greedy? She gulps down her food at such a fast pace its unreal. We are using tommee tippee bottles with a number 1 teet. Should I give her a faster/slower flow? hungry baby food maybe?

Any advice would be much appreciated, worrying as a first time mum.
Thanks

a 4 week old baby cannot be greedy, they need feeding often and as much as they want, their tummy is small and needs refilling a lot. also babies have frequent growth spurts.

i would try a different teat, she might be swallowing lots of air as she is gulping and working hard to get the milk out, hence the throwing up.

try a variflow or medium sized teat

she does not need hungry baby milk, that is for when babies are draining 9oz bottles every feed

Thanks very much for the advice, I will stop by the shop today & try a different teat.

She is quite content between feeds, so it may be just that she is working too hard to get the milk out.

Thanks again

Try a different formular. ( guessing thats what you are using).
When I had to change to bottle some made him sick untill I found one that suited him well.

We used a tt anti-colic bottle, with the central thingie, and a variflow slow flow newborn teat - Sainsbury's are the only reliable sellers of those teats. They're incredibly slow when new, but we have to change them every 3 or 4 weeks, as they speed up with age. My son did that on formula as well - it's horrible, I'm sorry. It might also be worth trying her on a pro-biotic free formula, like Hipp Organic? My son stopped vomiting whole feeds up 3 weeks after he stopped having C&G, which may or may not be coincidence. He still can't cope with any other bottles than that combination, though.

You can get the new BPA free bottles and the full range of teats from tommee tippee online shop - I posted a 25% discount code on the money off section, here.

My 5 week old DS also vomited up whole feeds daily, it was very difficult to feed him, he's also a greedy gulper -up to 6/7 oz by 5.5 weeks! I found out that he has gastric reflux, and has infant gaviscon now on presription - it's an alkaline thickener, calms the tummy and thickens the milk to help it stay down... Might be worth seeing GP if she appears to have gripes very often, it shows up between 4-5 weeks, and the babies can gulp because initially the milk calms the tummy. Vomiting up can happen anytime, during feeding to 2 hours later sometimes in my case. I also use the same equipment as Qually! It's great, she's right!
Comfort milk is thicker also, and I've found he didn't vomit quite as much back..
As the tummy muscles strengthen it often stops spontaneously.
babyreflux.co.uk gives advice for babies that vomit often too.

Thanks everyone for your help on this - I went to the doctors yesterday after speaking to my HV.
Doctor thinks she has reflux, and has given me the Gaviscon sachets, so will see how she goes with those.
I will definatly look at getting some of those bottles - Thanks for the discount code Qally

Might also try some of the C&G comfort smilenic81 Ive saw it yesterday, but was unsure wether I should buy any or not - but worth a go.

Thank again everyone

You're welcome! But in my experience don't mix comfort with the gaviscon - my DH fed our son for an hour without realising nothing came out because it had set like a rock! One unhappy baby!
