I am expecting dc2 and am very much committed to breast feed him. My first time was messed up due to wrong advices and misinformation. I have a question if someone can aswer please.

What if milk doesnt comes in 2-3 days? i know colostrum is there but if proper milk doesnt come and baby in hungry then will i have no choice but give formula?

There are plenty of experts here to advise you, but my milk didn't come in until after day 3 both times... babies are designed to survive on their stores and colostrum. By sucking they will help bring your milk in well. The only concern I'm aware of (as long as the nappies keep filling) is possible jaundice... the treatment for mild jaundice is lots of light.

Good luck!

smerchant, try not to worry about it. Just keep putting the baby to your breast and letting him/her suckle as much as they want to.

Milk usually comes in on day 2-3, and before that the colostrum is all that the baby needs as it's very highly concentrated and nutricious. Unless the baby is losing a dangerous amount of weight or badly jaundiced, then I can't see why you can't just keep putting baby to the breast.

There is lots of information on kellymom regarding the normal course of breastfeeding which will hopefully reassure you.

Like you I had a bad experience first time around and was really worried about it when pregnant with DD, but I read up lots of stuff on here, kellymom and elsewhere on the net, all of which helped me understand what was going on physically. As it was, DD was a voracious feeder and my milk came flooding in before the end of day 2.

good Luck

smerchant - I have had 3 babies one of which was 9lbs 3ozs and hungry and they have never had a drop of formula between them.

I know tiktok and the other experts will answer this better than I can but babies are designed to only have colostrum for the first few days, it's the additional formula that is unnatural IYSWIM.

Read all you can on BFing I had the NCT Book of Breastfeeding, also www.kellymom.com is fab

When I left the hospitsl with DS (at 6 days old) they gave me a leaflet about expressing colustrum at the very, very end of your third trimester. I can't remember the exact details myself (as it was too late for me to try by then) but your midwife would be able to tell you more.

I'm not sure why the OP would need to pre express some colostrum prettysprinkles?

The second stage of lactation is triggered by removal of the placenta so the body doesn't produce milk any quicker by expressing colostrum before the birth....if that's what you were thinking of?

kellymom is fab!

All I know is that both my boys were really unsettled during their second night and someone said this was probably because my milk hadn't come in that they were hungry. I just tried to feed them lots and things soon settled down.
