Gastroentertitis - Safe medication to take whilst breastfeeding?

Hi, I've been feeling ill for over a week now (went to g.p. on Friday who prescribed Lansoprazole - I read the instructions and it says not to take whilst breastfeeding!) - does anyone know of anything I can take to stop the bubbly feeling and nausea please?

Oh Browny, that doesn't sound fun.

The only people who can safely advise you about medications are your GP and pharmacist. I'm assuming your GP didn't check you were BFing?

I've had numerous discussions with both about what I can and can't take, having been BFing for over 2/5yrs now, and the basic problem is that no-one could ethically test products on bfing mums. So even products that are highly likely to be fine, are labelled as inappropriate because no-one either wants to make a bfing mum or baby ill, or risk getting sued.

However, I've got a great GP who will laboriously check each ingredient in his book of drugs and give me the pros and cons, and advice. I really think your GP is the only person who can help - could you get her to take a quick call about it?

Good luck, and hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Mij, I did tell my g.p. that I was breastfeeding, so I was shocked to find that the drug wasn't safe. I've been taking the domperidone tablets (they're supposed to ease the nausea) but they haven't worked at all. I think I will call and speak to another g.p. in the morning. Thank you for your advice .

www.ukmicentral.nhs.uk/drugpreg/qrg_p1.asp should help you.

Thank you so much tiktok (apparently I can take the drug in small amounts). Hope it works as I've been feeling ill for almost two weeks now.
