Please help i'm having a nightmare.
Ds is 9 weeks and has a floppy larynx and mild reflux.
We tried infant gaviscon and found that it made him very constipated.
We switched from cow and gate first, to cow and gate comfort-he has been having it for 3 days now and has been finishing bottles so he obviously loves it.
His reflux has been great and he has only been sick once.
The problem started in the night when he was in bad pain during a bottle with wind and this was the same with the morning bottle.
On and off for most of today he has been crying and nearly turning him inside out with pain then managing to pass wind then cry again till he passes wind again.
DH phoned Cow & Gate to see if this was normal when changing to this milk and they told us we were making up the bottles wrong.
We add the powder to 2oz of boiled water, mix really well and top up with cooled boiled water to the correct level.
C&G told us we need to mix the powder to water that had been boiled 10 mins before then rapidly cool under the tap to the right temp.
How is this any different? The powder is still being mixed in hot water just cooled down in a differnt way.
C&G rep said this could be the reason why ds was so windy.
Sorry this is so long winded (no pun intended).
How do you make yours and does your dc get very windy?

We used to make ours by having the bottle half/two-thirds full of cooled boiled water which we then used to add hot boiled water to and then add the formula. Probably not what was suggested but we did it for ages and it seemed to do the trick. Omneo Comfort does make babies fairly windy and gives them horrific nappies I am afraid!

nobodysfool · 06/03/2009 21:00

I have witnessed the nappies-nice.
The windy was unbearable for him though today. Is it common knowledge about it making them windy?

Could it be that because you are topping up to the correct level after the powder has been added you are not adding enough water? I'm only thinking this because when you add say 6 scoops to 6oz of water, the level actually reads 7oz iyswim?

SoupDragon · 06/03/2009 21:08

I think BlackLetterDay is right. To use your method, if you are using 6 scoops you need to add it to 2floz of boiled water and top it up with 4floz of cooled boiled water, not top up the bottle to 6floz, it's not the same.

nobodysfool · 06/03/2009 21:09

No,that not the problem, the 5 0z feed is nearly 5 half oz when made up (160 ml to be exact).

it is a totally different type of formula so it may be that he is gulping it down ... have you tried giving him some infacol or gripe water. Have you tried a slightly bigger or smaller teat to the bottle?

nobodysfool · 06/03/2009 21:30

He always has Dentinox colic drops in it and we use a fast flow teats as its so thick.
Do you think infacol would help as well?
Do you think i'm making the bottles up wrong?

ds had a floppy larynx as well and was sick pretty much non stop for the first year! The Comfort formula was fine for him but I think it probably took him a little while to get used to it. We swapped to it after trying Aptamil which had him screaming the place down - he was in soooo much pain! Perhaps try to make a couple of bottles the way they described - who knows maybe there is a difference in the way the formula mixes .. or try the way we did it. Maybe it is not the right formula for your ds?

nobodysfool · 06/03/2009 21:45

did he get very windy?

OP posts:
bodiddly · 06/03/2009 21:58

I think so but it was a long time ago now ... are you winding him half way through the bottle? To be honest the way you are describing it is more like the way ds reacted to the Aptamil .. though that was constant crying for about 5 hours straight!

nobodysfool · 06/03/2009 22:18

yes he is well winded.
He cries in pain but nowhere near 5 hours!Thank goodness.Your LO must have been in agony poor lo.
I hate the fact its all trial and error. For a control freak like me its hell .

Have you tried the anti-wind type bottles with the plastic things in them? Sorry my mind is like a sieve .. I cant remember what they are called? We used some with a special valve in them to help prevent any further wind. If he is still like it in a day or two then I think I would be tempted to try something else as maybe it just doesnt agree with him. Perhaps he is lactose intolerant? Ds was slightly and the comfort helped but we had to introduce dairy very slowly .. and used soya products a great deal.

chipmonkey · 06/03/2009 22:36

Do you mean Dr Browns bodiddley?

chipmonkey · 06/03/2009 22:40

nobodysfool, my SIL used C&G comfort and her dd farted a lot on it but she felt that with the previous formula the wind was getting trapped inside her dd whereas with the C&G Comfort it was being expelled!

nobodysfool · 07/03/2009 20:55

We are already using Dr Browns.
Good thoughth about the wind escaping rather tham being trapped. He has been a bit better today so maybe his body is just adapting to this new formula.

OP posts:
chipmonkey · 07/03/2009 22:19

I think SIL's dd did take a day or two to adapt.
MIL was supremely unhelpful at the time. Kept going on and on about the farting on the formula even though the baby was much better on it than on her previous one. At one point she even suggested to SIL that she should try to bf even though the baby was 12 weeks old at the time and SIL is on meds which mean she can't bf!
Just one other thing. Apparently the formula tastes awful compared to "normal" formula but this is to be expected due to the enzymes it contains. Just in case you ever taste it and think it's gone off! It's supposed to taste like that

standanddeliver · 08/03/2009 09:16

You aren't advised to use just boiled water with any of the formulas because the heat of the water denatures them.

The water needs to be at around 70 degrees, not boiling, before being added to the powder.

Also think quantity of water could be an issue. If you are adding powdered milk to water then topping up with more water you will end up with a different concentration than if you added the water in one go.

But like other people suggest, it could be that it's just the milk itself.

Hope you find a solution to your feeding problem.

bodiddly · 10/03/2009 08:21

how is your ds doing nobodysfool? has he got used to the omneo comfort or have you swapped him to something diffferent?

nobodysfool · 11/03/2009 21:44

sorry about going awol.
He seems to be getting on better with it the last couple of days.He certainly likes it better than the normal formula.
Still gets a lot of wind but it's not bothering him as much.
His reflux has been a bit better though he had a bad day today and had to have some Gaviscon.
Thanks for asking.
