infacol and constipation?

been giving my 4 week old breastfed ds infacol for his very painful wind bordering on colic - lots of screaming in the mornings and evenings. He hasn't had a dirty nappy for two days having always had 2 or 3 a day. He still seems to be having real tummy pains. Could the infacol be causing this? Should I switch him to gripe water or something else? He is a very frequent feeder - every two hours at most if that makes any difference?

Hi eggy, I dont know if this is any help but my son was the same. I tried infacol and gripe water and both didnt seem to work, this went on for a couple of weeks where he was very unsettled. we also tried cooled down boiled water as it was the first time I had breast fed and didnt really know what to do. It got better in a few weeks but at the time seemed like hell because of no sleep and not knowing what was wrong with the poor little mite. He was also a frequent feeder but I think this is normal for breast fed babies as both of my children were. If you have any breast feeding support groups in your area I would try and join if you have time they are good for info, but if not try and talk to health visitor. You have probably been told that before but if your concerned it may put your mind at rest. Plus its very hard work so some support might make you feel better. good luck hope this helps

I'm not sure, but constipation is mentioned as a possible side effect of its active ingredient here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simethicone and I've heard other mums wonder if this is the case. Lots of mums feel its useful too though. I really hope things improve soon.

I've wondered if Infacol somehow slows down the progress of things through the intestine/colon, my DD has been on it for a week (seems to be really working easing her wind now, from both ends!) but she is producing less frequent dirty nappies than before. When she does go, they're huge...

Has your DS been bringing up wind any more easily since being on the Infacol? Is he having it before every feed? And how long has he been on it? It has a cumulative effect so needs to be given before each and every feed and takes a good few days to really help with wind/colic.

If he's been having it for a week before every feed and is in no less discomfort than before I'd be tempted to try something else. Have you thought about Colief? Bit of a pain if you're BFing as it has to be given in expressed milk but I've heard many success stories.

we were using the infacol religiously before every feed, but have stopped it since he stopped having dirty nappies - getting concerned as it's been over 2 days - nearly 3 now. It did seem to help his wind.

colief is one we haven't tried so might give that a go - good old gripe water doesn't seem to be doing the trick

I think it can be normal for dirty nappies to slow down. My mainly bf ds is 9 weeks and only has a dirty nappy every few days but the first few weeks they seemed to be all day every day! Seem to remember DD was the same. He has infacol very infrequently but is also very windy.

My little one is also suffering from constipation, we tried Infacol but it has been a hit and miss really, the Dr has prescrbed her Colief which seems to be a little better now not completley gone though. w
The Dr also recommened giving the baby an ounce of orange juice diluted with cool bolied water as she doesn't drink water.

My Dd suffered from colic, wind and constipation. I am a first time mum. So, I thought it was normal for a baby to cry so much as the gp told me it was also normal!!! I knew something was wrong ... so I kept pushing the gp and for him to finally say yes it was colic. I started using gripe water and wow it made such a difference. I had a happy baby !! I also use infacol combined but may stop the infacol as the gripe water seems to do the trick.
