Can anyone tell me why my babies bf stools are so orange, so explosive (often leak EVERYWHERE) and stain clothes!

Very pungent stuff!

Why the orange? and copious amounts/staining! lol

Because (and I'm not going to enter into a bf/ff debate) formula is cows milk with lots of added extras at the end of the day and not human milk therefore not as easily absorbed by the babies.

Do ff babies do poos that stain so badly aswell?

mumofdjandbabies · 06/03/2009 13:30

I have done both with different children, and ff babies are more solid, much more!

mumofdjandbabies · 06/03/2009 13:32

Im not sure, i don't remember my nieces and nephews having any staining problems? I may be wrong i only have my experiences to go by, but i seem to remeber thier poo was alot solider than all of the bf babies i know who have been a bit more explosive!

Divvy · 06/03/2009 13:33

I have this time, exclusively bf till 7 months, and now that I am starting to give him a "little" food, its getting worse!

mumofdjandbabies · 06/03/2009 13:34

dont tell me that divvy dunno why

OP posts:
Divvy · 06/03/2009 13:35

I think its to do with going through there system so quickly, hence the regular feeding, every 2 hours, instead of my ff babues every 4 hours. Think there bowels are working faster/better.

CharleeInChains · 06/03/2009 13:35

SOme babies are just smaller than other, as long as she is gaining wieght steadily and your HV is happy with her progress i wouldn't worry.

Divvy · 06/03/2009 13:37

Maybe she is just little? Has she put on weight?

I know my baby has not doubled his weight from birth at the 6 month mark, but he has never lost weight. If your baby has lost weight its needs checking.

He has his review next week, and I know soething will be said about his weight.

mumofdjandbabies · 06/03/2009 13:38

I dont like going makes me anxious, dunno why but does havent had her weighed for aggges

OP posts:
Divvy · 06/03/2009 14:59

I was ment to go back and get him weighed, as the hv wasnt happy with his weight gain. So beens she commented at 5 months, that I would be weaning him soon....I didnt go back!

I didnt want to start weaning him at 5+ months! Plus at 7 months he isnt sitting on his own yet, so he is not really quite ready IMO

Sunlight gets bf poo stains out very well, IME -- if you have somewhere you can spread out the offending garment outside with the stained bit uppermost it only takes a few hours.

mumofdjandbabies · 06/03/2009 15:35

my 6 monther doesnt seem hungry yet screams at my trying of food!

ooh will try sunlight trick thanks

PortAndLemon · 06/03/2009 15:44

(wash it first, then put it outside still wet -- or you can wet something with an existing stain)

MamacitaGordita · 06/03/2009 20:38

I'm with the poster who prefers reusables- we had to use disposables at one point and they were no match for the poo compared to his cloth nappies/waterproof wraps. although I actually enjoy the challenge of a real explosion and think, wow! Go DS! lol

Divvy · 06/03/2009 20:48

I think at 7 months old, and the look we all give him when he erupts, he is getting close to laughing when he does it now..it has great comic value!

princessdaisyboo · 06/03/2009 21:45

hi my baby's nappies were exactly the same and we have just had it confirmed he is lactose intolerant, he was very "colicky" from birth and we used colief in his milk that reduced the amount of lactose and he did improve but his nappies always very explosive and bright yellow/orange, and sometimes upto 10 times a day, he has always cried a lot ( more than DD ever did)and had very runny pooh but never sick and a very big baby so doctor just said he was greedy but when he had diorreah for two weeks the doctors eventually sent a sample of his pooh away and there was sugar in it so we then saw a doctor at hospital who confirmed the intolerance, only 24 hours after switching milk he is so much happier and his nappies are totally different!!! it worth asking them to check just in case.
xx

mumofdjandbabies · 07/03/2009 17:34

OOH REALLY?oops caps

can bf babies be intolerant do you know? xx

The colour of poo is determined by the amount of bile (produced by the liver) released into the gut.

IMO orange sounds OK

Check this out...lovely topic...
