I have a 9 week old who has a floppy larynx and reflux.
We tried infant gaviscon but it made him constipated.
We are trying Cow & Gate Comfort which seems to be staying down as it is so thick but would really like to find one that sells them in cartons as well for out and about.

Um, maybe a hungry baby milk of some kind? Aptamil do hungry baby in cartons.

you should be able to be prescribed something if he needs thicker formula.

three of mine have had severe reflux, and when I weaned them on to dairy-fre formula I was also given a powder to add to their milk that thickened it, rather than a special thick formula (IYGWIM).

i used comfort for a while (but had to change due to allergies) but both my ds's ended up on nanny goat milk (under paed advice) and my 15 week old ds2 has this and has been prescribed carobel which is a natural thickener which is a powder. Why dont you just put the right amount of scoops into one of those dispenser type things? Thats what i do. Your better to have to faff abit then mess about with babies milk if it suits him. Im only saying that having my ds with very severe medication and tried on every formula under the sun

Freddysteddy-Can i use hungry baby formula on a 9 week old?

Psychomum5-I'm sure the GP would prescribe formula if i asked just wanted to find a readily availble one if there was such a thing.

mad4mybaby-I already use one of those dispenser things but the faffing is with the hot water and making sure it's hot enough to kill the nasty bacteria things-i didnt bother with ds1 but with the new guidelines (yawn yawn)i'm trying to to the 'right' thing especially as ds2 was born nearly 4 weeks early.

fair enough, but I actually don;t think there is such a thing easily bought I'm afraid.

tis hell enough getting hypo-allergenic formula, without also getting thick formula too.

one thing, it didn;t actually work for mine. if anything, made DD3 worse! (altho she had silent reflux too, so the thick feed didn;t get vomited, it got stuck!)

mad4mybaby · 05/03/2009 20:48

i know what you mean about the temp thing. i take a small thermos flask out with water boiling water from kettle, but then i dont have much choice!! What with the milk, thickner and ds2 medicines, bottles, flask someone the other day goes to me 'ooh it looks like your doing a science experiment!' to be fair im used to it as did with both ds's.

nobodysfool · 05/03/2009 20:56

psycho-i'm not worried about the hypo qualities as there doesn't seem to be any link for him but i believe the thicker consistancy is helping no end.

mad4-I know it looks like we are going for a week the amount of stuuf we need to take.

i have a huuuuge bag!! Esp as you need extra change of clothes, bibs, muslins etc for refluxers plus i have ds1 whos still in nappys and people look at my almost suitcase like bag abit

nobodysfool · 05/03/2009 21:47

I dont know about a double buggy/change bag i could really do with a suitcase with seats on wheels!

Aptamil do an easy digest milk that is thicker and can help with reflux, you may need new teats though as it won't go through the first size ones, don't think they do it in cartons though.

Did the GP diagnose your baby with constipation? I only ask because when I started my DD on gaviscon she started to pooh less frequently and when she did it was very firm and a slightly odd looking texture - all apparently, very normal.

Please go back to your GP though, you shouldn't start easy digest milk, stopping medication etc unless under advice from doctor really. There is other medicine for reflux that could help.

nobodysfool · 05/03/2009 22:31

Ewe- he hadnt had a poo for 3 days and in visable pain so im guessing i dont need the gp to tell me he was constipated.
He only has mild reflux so it wasnt an issue to take him off the gaviscon as it was causing more problems rather than sorting them out.
Is there any medical reason why he shouldnt have easy digest milk? Will it do any harm?

Can't imagine it would, it's only got thickener in but am no expert!

I only asked about the pooh because I had v.similar experience to you, took DD off gaviscon, put her on ED thought she was constipated as didn't pooh for over a week and was told that was perfectly normal by GP, put her back on gaviscon and no probs since!

Good luck sorting it out

I used omneo comfort for my baby when she had reflux and tongue-tie - and we got on well with it and liked it as far as formulae milk goes.

We tried the Aptamil first milk, but DD was allergic to either the fish oil or egg lipids in it. I didn't find it particularly thick either - but we were just looking to supplement breastfeeding at that stage due to dd's poor weight gain.

They may have changed the formulae since then as DD is now 5y.

I wish I had pumped breastmilk and fed it to dd in bottles (as she had trouble feeding at the breast due to the tongue tie!), or insisted they cut her tongue tie (which I did much later on - when both bottles and solids had not helped her gain weight!).

Hope you get some help from your doctor or health visitor!

My baby had Aptamil easy digest and it is good, but as someone said you will need a size 2 or 3 teat as it is thicker. Also, the water needs to be VERY hot when you make it up - to dislove the starches in it. Sadly, comfort formulas dont come in handy cartots becauue of the way they are made (whey based), they cannot be stored that way (or so the lady at the aptamil helpline told me)

Easy digest is suitable from birth til 12 months if needed. I have just taken my son who is 23 weeks off it to the first milk with no probs.

Good luck x
