Breastfeeding & day surgery

I am exclusively breastfeeding my almost 4 month old. I only pump enough milk to mix his gaviscon with before a feed, he takes the bottle well, but he has never had a full feed from a bottle. I am going to have to pump 2 bottles for next week as we are going to see a concert, I was not worried about this. I then had a call today to schedule an op to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed. I have been on the list since New years eve and asked them to put it off as long as possible, but now the 16 weeks that they have to get me in is almost up and surgery is scheduled for the 18th. Now I have the dilema in that I doubt I will be able to pump enough milk for our evening out next week and, as was suggested, a full 24 hours worth of feeds for when I have my surgery.

I am under no illusions that I will probably feel like absolute crap after surgery, but is it really necessary to pump enough milk for 24 hours??? Ds3 feeds ever 3 hours during the day, and sleeps through, so has 6 feeds a day. I doubt I will be out for long, maybe 20-30 minutes, plus I would need to pump anyway to keep my supply up, which is waaaaaay more hassle than feeding the baby myself.

Does anyone have any advice about short term GA's & breastfeeding? Is it the GA I have to worry about, or the pain meds/antibiotics?

Don't GA C/S women breastfeed whilst on pain killers?

Very good point! Just goes to show that dental surgeon has no clue! Perhaps he suggested pumping enough for the first day incase I feel lousy, but I should imagine a c/s hurts more. Plus I would still have the hassle of pumping, which would take longer than just letting him nurse, 10 minutes and we're done.

Very strange advice to pump for 24 hours after a GA....when you are conscious, the GA is out of your blood (and therefore out of your milk), otherwise you would be unconscious Check with the anaesthetist if the stuff you will be getting has some sort of hangs-about-in-the-milk metabolite of course, but make sure you ask about what happens to section mums...who, as Snowlight says, normally bf as soon as they come round

i fed (my then-6 month old) within three hours of a GA. the anesthetist assured me it was fine.

the trickier thing may be feeding your little one before the GA, depending on whether he can be there with you?

I am going in for a ga in a couple of weeks and i have a 13 week old. i was assured that my dd could stay with me until the last possible opputunity and will be waiting for me when i get out of recovery with my mum. (dp has hospital phobia and will be caring for other 2 dc)
i was also told that fedding 3-4 hours after the ga was fine. so only would need one bottle to be sure to cover the time span.
just tell them that is what you want, and there is no medical reason for it to be otherwise. hope it goes ok, i too have had wisdom teeth out and it isnt as bad as you think after.

sorry for mistakes, feeding said dd!

Thanks Chandellina & amyjo! I was told I have to be there for 7.30am, which os roughly the time ds has his "early morning" feed, as he then sleeps until 10. I was also told I would be discharged at lunchtime. So I could feed him on arrival at 7.30, he could have a bottle at 10 and I could feed him myself from his 1-1.30pm feed. I think dh is going to take the boys home after dropping me off and pick me up later (my hospital has recently had wards closed due to norovirus, I would rather the boys stay away!)

I also looked it up in my copy of "The womanly art of breastfeeding" and saw pretty much what Tiktok said, once you wake up, it's out of your system.
