BF and periods...!

DS is 5 m.o and exclusively BF. Still feeding well inc 2 feeds at night but yesterday my periods started again-really wasn't expecting this!
Is this 'normal'?
Will the hormone fluctuations cause any probs with milk production/flow?

Hi Mishkamoo, I've just posted a similar question as I think I ovulated for the first time at the weekend and have now noticed a drop in my supply and wondering whether a connection or not. My DS is 5mo as well.

mishkamoo · 04/03/2009 17:46

How do you know you ovulated??!!
Oh I really hope it will be ok, BF is going so well at the mo and DS is doing really well on it. Hadn't planned to start weaning until 6m.

Lots of EWCM and pain in my side, which have always had when ovulate before my DS was born, so assuming my hormones aren't completely up the shoot I got all the normal symtoms. I may be completely wrong though.

My periods returned when dd was 4 months old. I was exclusively bfeeding every 2 hours day and night. I felt robbed.

I fed her exclusively till 6.5 months (and a whopping 25lb so thriving) and am still feeding at 21 months.

My supply does change very slightly when I ovulate and during af but she just feeds more to compensate.

No problems, annoyed me a bit, but she's fine.

Some periods return at 4 weeks, some at 4 years, it's lucky dip!

ShowOfHands · 04/03/2009 17:59

Only other thing is it makes me a bit anaemic as I wasn't properly recoverd from the cs so I eat lots of iron rich food to compensate.

You may find that you have irregular periods for a while too. It's normal when breastfeeding. You can go months and months without one. You may or may not ovulate too so just be careful unless you want another baby now.

I had about 7 months of periods before I was actually fertile again. For a long time there was too short a time between ovulation and bleeding for an egg to implant. It's hormonal and can take a while to settle.

Ha! Mine returned at 9 weeks

They are still a bit irregular... I used to be regular as clockwork before I was pg. I guess when I stop bfing they'll become more regular. ON the plus side, should be okay to TTC in the summer - can't see ds wanting to stop bfing any time before then!

ShowOfHands · 04/03/2009 18:05

I was still bleeding from the birth at 9 weeks. You have my sympathy.

This beautiful, natural and amazing thing that is having babies sure is accompanied by a lot of blood isn't it? I'd complain if I thought there was somewhere to address the letter.

ShyTalk · 04/03/2009 18:11

Yes, I thought B/F meant no periods for quite a while . (Just a happy side-effect, not my main motivation) Sadly, no; mine returned at about 8 weeks, despite DS being a greedy bugger and feeding every 2 and a half hours at best, every 45mins during a growth spurt .
At least I was pretty sure I wasn't PG!

ShowOfHands · 04/03/2009 18:15

I think that every month as the hell descends. At least I'm not pregnant.

Just found this thread as I was searching to find out if seven month dd bfing and still no periods was normal - I guess so and I should enjoy it while it lasts.

mishkamoo · 05/03/2009 08:01

Thanks for the reassurance-pleased to know that DS won't starve!!

SoH - PMSL! I'd be writing too...

I think I had a week's break between the postpartum bleed and my first period!
