Lopsided feeding....help!

I have started to notice that one breast seems more efficient than the other one. I still make sure I offer the "lazy" side as frequently as the other but DD (3 weeks) can become either very frustrated or she just gives up. I have started to feel more full on the efficient side too. Is there anything I can do? Am I doing something wrong?

I had this problem with both dcs. I think there is almost always one side that they prefer more and/or has more production. You might try expressing a bit on the "lazy" side as it will encourage your body to increase production. In my case I had a flatter nipple on one side and wound up using a nipple shield for several weeks in order to coax ds2 into taking it.

I have just bought a pump so I might give it a go. Also have some shields somewhere. Thanks for the advice

I had this too, gave up eventually and just fed on the decent side for the last 6 weeks or so.

They were different sizes but are back to normal since I gave up (3 weeks ago).

Hi, I have found the same thing happens but have persevered and it has evened out although not completely. Still end up doing the evening feed on the better side as he seems to settle better. Expressing does seem to help even it up.

I've found that they seem to flow at different speeds so the baby seems to prefer one side when tiny and the other when a bit bigger. Or maybe I'm just imagining it...anyway, I just sort of try to force them to feed from the side they don't want to sometimes during the day but can never be bothered at night. I think your body definitely adjusts as I def make more milk at night in the preferred side.

sasamaxx · 03/03/2009 21:55

Hmm - that sounded like I was feeding 2 babies didn't it?
Just to clarify, DS is 3 and not bf any more, DD is 8 mths and is but they both followed this same pattern.

Yes I'm the same at night, give in and use the favoured side which probably doesn't help! Will give expressing a go.

I had a similar problem (DS latched better on one side perhaps due to ventouse delivery) and always tried to feed equally from both sides. In the end it didn't really matter too much - he still prefers one side to the other. It's easier for me to feed him on that side (as I do most feeds lying on my side) and he gets enough milk. We still 'use' the other side and it is pretty productive but I don't force it. He's six months old now and over 20lb.

A friend of mine feeds pretty much from one side too.

Probably good to keep trying to use that side and feeding from the less good side will get much easier but try not to worry about it too much as your body will supply the right of milk one way or the other.

(Someone once told me that Geisha's fed only from one side as their kimonos only opened up easily on one side)
