Lumpy Boob - is it anything to do with...

I have recently (about two weeks ago) weaned my 8 month old onto formula. She was exclusively breast fed. I tried to do it gently, replacing one feed at a time, but she was having none of it. I'm guessing her opinion was is it's available at night then it should be in the day! I tried BF and then a bit of formula which she was happy with, but she wouldn't have milk unless preceeded by booby! So after a week of struggling I just stopped BF completely and within a day she was happily on formula.

Anyway, my left boob is suddenly very sore and I have found a lump under my nipple (well I say that, but it moves around a bit, sometimes under, sometimes beside...). I asked my mother if she ever had this problem after weaning off babies and she suggested it is just engorged. But I have had engorged boobs before and it is nothing like this! I didn't seem to have any problem with stopping producing milk and within a couple of days I was dry! I don't want to bug my doctor and for him to say it is just milk. I have made a fool of myself enough times with paranoid mother syndrome and I have little dignity left!

Isn't two weeks a little long to suddenly become engorged?

Any advice would be very welcome...

It could be a blocked duct, is there a red patch where the lump is? How do you feel? Are you tired? Shivery? Achey?

What happens when you try to hand express from that boob?

I'd probably try a warm compress (hot flannel or one of those wheat bag things) and some massge tp see if you can soften the lump, firmish strokes from the outside towards the nipple, and take ibuprofen. Keep an eye on and if it gets worse or you start to feel like you've got flu call the Out of Hours GP.
